Fresh from an impressive display in a critical Western Conference clash, the Minnesota Timberwolves are gearing up to maintain their momentum as they prepare to face the struggling Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday night.

This upcoming game will mark the start of a two-game series between the Timberwolves and the Trail Blazers. The rematch is scheduled for Thursday, once again in Portland, serving as the final showdown before the All-Star break for both teams.

Minnesota showcased dominance on Monday night, securing a remarkable 121-100 victory on the road against the Los Angeles Clippers, establishing a lead of up to 24 points in the process.

Despite a shaky first half that saw them trailing by four points at halftime, the Timberwolves surged in the second half, outscoring the Clippers 72-47, with a standout performance of 40-19 in the third quarter.

“I didn’t think we brought enough force and physicality to the game in the first half,” Timberwolves coach Chris Finch said. “I thought we played good basketball, but there were a bunch of plays where they were way more physical than we were. They were hitting first and we were getting out of the way at times, and that’s not what we do.”

Karl-Anthony Towns contributed 24 points while Anthony Edwards showcased an impressive performance with 23 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds, aiding Minnesota to secure their second win out of three games on the ongoing five-game road trip.

Rudy Gobert also made his mark with 17 points and 10 rebounds, tallying his 36th double-double of the season.

“I’m proud of the way we came out tonight and now we’ll see if we can handle success and we’re right back at it tomorrow,” Gobert said postgame.

On the other hand, the Trail Blazers have faced a string of defeats, losing their last four games as they enter the third match of a seven-game homestand.

Though plagued by a series of injuries, Portland is expecting the return of high-scoring guard Anfernee Simons, who missed a game due to a sprained left ankle.

Simons demonstrated his scoring prowess with 29 points in just 25 minutes before being sidelined in the game against the Detroit Pistons. Portland, despite holding a 23-point lead when he got injured, ended up losing 128-122 in overtime.

With an average of 23.4 points per game, Simons has been absent for a significant number of Portland’s matches, including an 18-game absence due to a thumb injury sustained in the season opener.

While Simons is expected to return to the court on Tuesday, rookie point guard Scoot Henderson‘s participation remains uncertain due to a sprained left foot, causing his absence in the recent games against Detroit and the New Orleans Pelicans.

Injury updates reveal that Malcolm Brogdon will be sidelined for a minimum of two weeks with an elbow issue, whereas Shaedon Sharpe underwent abdominal surgery, necessitating a recovery period of at least six weeks.

Forward Jabari Walker highlighted the challenges posed by the constant wave of injuries faced by the Trail Blazers.

“Yeah, it’s tough just because we want to find a rhythm and sometimes you don’t know who is playing up until the game,” Walker said. “It’s tough for the team. It’s tough for us to rely on certain things.”

Noteworthy forward Jerami Grant has been in exceptional form, averaging 28.4 points in the last five games, which included a remarkable career-high of 49 points in a single game against the Pistons.

Despite Grant’s efforts, the Trail Blazers struggled offensively in their recent game against the Pelicans, failing to notch more than 24 points in any quarter.

“I thought our defense was incredible the whole game,” Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups said. “Our defense was lights out. That’s one of the better offensive teams in the league, and we held them to 93 points. We just weren’t able to manufacture points.”

In their prior encounter on Jan. 12, the Timberwolves secured a convincing 116-93 victory against the Trail Blazers. Gobert showcased a stellar performance with 24 points and 17 rebounds, while Towns added 23 points.

Meanwhile, Walker led Portland’s efforts with 17 points and 13 rebounds.

Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert’s availability is questionable for the upcoming Game 2 happening on Monday night in Denver for personal reasons.

In the opener of the Western Conference semifinal series on Saturday, Gobert played a significant role by contributing six points, grabbing 13 rebounds, making three blocks, and assisting three times in the team’s 106-99 victory.

Being a three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and a three-time All-Star, Gobert maintained an average of 14.0 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks in 76 games during the regular season.

Standing tall at 7-foot-1, the 31-year-old Gobert has an overall average of 12.7 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks throughout his career in 757 games for the Utah Jazz (2013-22) and the Timberwolves.
