Caitlin Clark astonishes the basketball world, achieving a career-high 49 points in an unprecedented feat. The Iowa Hawkeyes triumphed over the Michigan Wolverines, 106-89 in a dominating fashion on their home court.
“You break it, you own it.” That was the Nike slogan for Thursday night.
An exceptional night for Iowa Hawkeyes standout Caitlin Clark. Despite Michigan deploying a box-and-one defense, Clark demonstrated her invincibility.
She commenced the evening just eight points away from the all-time Division 1 women’s basketball scoring crown. In front of a packed Carver-Hawkeye Arena, Clark reached this milestone within the first three minutes of play.
The historic basket came on a three-point shot with 7:48 left in the opening quarter, facilitated by Gabbie Marshall. She concluded the game with a career-best 49 points, 5 rebounds, and 13 assists, shooting 16-31 (51.6 percent from the field).
Usually stoic on the court, Clark was observed shedding tears last evening. The reason? The overwhelming backing from her family and siblings. Clark promptly acknowledged the steadfast support she has received from her teammates, coaches, and parents through the highs and lows.
The tribute video was profoundly moving, as Clark watched from the hardwood.
Clark is close to surpassing Pete Maravich for the all-time scoring record
Clark expressed confidence on how she would surpass the scoring milestone.
“You all knew I was going to shoot a logo three for the record, come on now,” remarked Clark post-game followed by chuckles. (Iowa Hawkeyes PR).
Clark has now surpassed Las Vegas Aces star Kelsey Plum, claiming the top spot in Division 1 Women’s Basketball with 3,569 points. She currently trails Antoine Davis of Detroit Mercy by 95 points, who holds the second all-time position in Division 1 men’s basketball with 3,664 points.
“Pistol Pete” Maravich, representing LSU, retains the pinnacle of the charts as the all-time leading scorer in Division 1 NCAA men’s basketball with 3,667 points. With a deficit of 98 points behind Maravich, Clark must maintain an average of 24.5 points or higher over the remaining four games of the season.
Averaging 32.8 points for the season, she is on pace to surpass Maravich’s record. This milestone is likely to occur on senior night, against Ohio State, on Mar. 3.
The Caitlin Clark phenomenon is AUTHENTIC
Clark racing back for defensive duties, as her family watched on, the audience erupted in cheers. With 7:18 on the clock in the first quarter, her comrades greeted the basketball prodigy on the court. Clark, donning a broad smile, shared an emotional moment with Iowa head coach Lisa Blunder. Following a break for fluids, she garnered a standing ovation and recognition at the arena.
Clark remarked, “I thought coach Blunder was going to call the timeout before I had to go play defense. But she didn’t, so I had to go play defense.”
Admitting she could have made the shot much earlier, Clark insisted she was slightly fatigued. After all, she scored a total of eight minutes in under three minutes. Vividly, the Hawkeyes guard recalls the moment.
“I think I kind of stepped back to my left a little bit and was able to get it off.” stated Clark (Hawkeyes PR).
Beaming during the post-game media session, Clark voiced appreciation for the journey.
“I don’t know if you can script it any better,” Clark shared with the press. “Just to do it in this fashion, I’m very grateful. I’m very thankful to be surrounded by so many people that have kind of been my foundation ij everything that I’ve done since I was a young little girl.” (Iowa Hawkeyes PR)
The Caitlin impact is genuine. Caitlin’s influence is indisputable, as she has significantly impacted the advancement and growth of women’s basketball. Continuing to assert her dominance on the court, Clark emerges as a transformative figure, inspiring not only women’s sports but also young enthusiasts with ambitions.
Caitlin Clark has elevated women’s sports
By elevating the prominence of women’s basketball, Clark emerges as a once-in-a-generation talent with a profound influence on and off the court, a legacy set to endure for years. According to the NCAA, schools hosting Iowa and Clark have witnessed an uptick in attendance by up to 150 percent.
Not to mention the 55,646 spectators at a preseason fixture against DePaul at Kinnick Stadium. This alone shattered the all-time attendance record for women’s basketball (NCAA).
“The way these fans support women’s basketball is so special,” remarked Caitlin Clark.
In conjunction with her escalating popularity, three of Iowa’s games have aired on leading networks this season. Preceding Super Bowl Sunday, the Iowa vs. Nebraska match attracted an astounding 1.77 million views, setting a record for women’s basketball on the Fox network.
With women’s sports on the rise, thanks to Clark and other emerging stars, ESPN has secured a new eight-year media contract with the NCAA.
Soaring in popularity, Clark transcends mere scoring. Averaging 6.9 rebounds and 8.5 assists, the guard showcases elite skills on the boards and is a remarkable facilitator. Recollecting her early days with the Hawkeyes, she reminisces about the sparse media presence at games. Nevertheless, she maintains her steadfast approach to the game.
“There was like no one here,” reflected Clark on her initial game with Iowa her Freshman year. “I saw some clips of me playing the other day–I look a lot different, my hair is a lot longer, I’m very very scrawny, I had no muscle definition. A lot of my game is the exact same, so that was funny to watch, and it’s crazy how time flies. It feels just yesterday I was playing that game with nobody in the stands, wearing a mask on the bench. It’s kind of cool to see the evolution of what this has become.” (Hawkeyes PR).
Even after setting a new record, Caitlin Clark remains dedicated to her team
In spite of the historic night, Clark expressed her thanks towards her teammates and their outstanding performance against Michigan. With just four games remaining in the season, the guard is concentrating fully on concluding strongly and aiming for a successful journey in March Madness. Iowa stands strong at 23-3, maintaining the No. 4 seed.
“I think getting this record is tremendous and has to be celebrated,” mentioned Clark in her press briefing. “There’s been so many people to come before me and lay such a great foundation for women’s basketball and that has to be celebrated too. We are getting into the best part of basketball season. These are the times where your team really shows who they are. I think Iowa basketball is at such a high right now, and it’s so fun to watch. Just trying to enjoy every single second, because this team is special.” (Hawkeyes PR).
Clark emphasized that she wouldn’t have reached this point without her teammates, indicating “Moving forward, it is all about Iowa basketball, and rightfully so.”
The next test for Iowa looms as they gear up to take on the No. 14 Indiana on the road on February 22nd. In the subsequent matches, they are set to face off against Illinois, Minnesota, and Ohio State.
An iconic player, the Iowa standout could opt to join the professional ranks at the end of the season. Alternatively, she may decide to return for a fifth season with Iowa.
