Zion Williamson Will Never Participate in the Dunk Contest

Zion Williamson: I'll do the dunk contest if I'm in the All-Star game | Image: NBA on ESPN/YouTube
After every NBA All-Star weekend, the buzz around the slam dunk contest lasts for a couple of weeks, whether it’s thrilling, disappointing, or somewhere in between.
Now, Zion Williamson has stoked the dunk contest discussion by playfully suggesting that he would only take part if he’s an All-Star.
While it sounds promising, the modern-day superstars prefer reveling in the All-Star Weekend festivities over competing in the dunk contest. It’s amusing how younger players often resent accusations of lacking competitive spirit from the older generation and yet dodge the dunk contest themselves.
Williamson’s ultimatum appears insincere, given his track record. Despite being named an All-Star twice already, he might be frustrated at not making the cut this season, especially considering his relatively robust health, having played in 51 out of the Pelicans’ 62 games.
His willingness to compete in the dunk contest seems to diminish as he gains more experience in the league. Although at 23, Williamson theoretically has plenty of chances ahead, his injury history may thwart that possibility.
Seemingly, Williamson teases us with the prospect of his participation just to silence the ongoing queries about it. While this tactic is understandable, it doesn’t necessarily sit well with everyone. The debate regarding his All-Star snub this year may fuel expectations for the coming years, yet the excuses for his dunk contest absence are likely to continue.
Most prominent players of this era hold little enthusiasm for the slam dunk contest. LeBron James abstained from it, Ja Morant has expressed disinterest, and the same could be said for Williamson. Despite the inevitable discussions and complaints, acceptance of this reality may dawn upon us sooner or later.

Wolves C Rudy Gobert (Personal) Uncertain for Game 2
The Impact of Rudy Gobert's Absence Against the Nuggets in Game 2
Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert’s availability is questionable for the upcoming Game 2 happening on Monday night in Denver for personal reasons.
In the opener of the Western Conference semifinal series on Saturday, Gobert played a significant role by contributing six points, grabbing 13 rebounds, making three blocks, and assisting three times in the team’s 106-99 victory.
Being a three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and a three-time All-Star, Gobert maintained an average of 14.0 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks in 76 games during the regular season.
Standing tall at 7-foot-1, the 31-year-old Gobert has an overall average of 12.7 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks throughout his career in 757 games for the Utah Jazz (2013-22) and the Timberwolves.
If Gobert is unable to play against the reigning champions, Naz Reid, who won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year this season, may step into the starting lineup.
