Wizards Defeat Spurs, Finally Win Consecutive Matches

Kyle Kuzma accumulated 18 points and 11 rebounds and Daniel Gafford contributed 16 points and 13 boards as the visiting Washington Wizards came from behind to defeat the San Antonio Spurs 118-113 on Monday.
The Wizards leveled the score at 107 with Jordan Poole‘s 3-pointer with 3:42 remaining to cap a 9-0 surge. Tyus Jones‘ jump shot with 2:12 left handed Washington the lead for good, and Jones made another jump shot with 1:20 remaining to extend the lead to 116-113.
Gafford’s second chance dunk with 5.7 seconds left effectively secured the victory for the Wizards, who secured back-to-back victories for the first time this season and split the season series with San Antonio.
Marvin Bagley III and Jones each contributed 15 points for Washington, with Poole adding 13.
Devin Vassell led San Antonio with 24 points. Victor Wembanyama added 22 points and 11 rebounds, Cedi Osman scored a season-high 20 points off the bench, Keldon Johnson had 14 points and Tre Jones scored 11 in the defeat.
The Spurs assembled a 21-6 run culminating with Johnson’s driving layup to take a 35-22 advantage with 20.5 seconds to play in the first quarter. A late three-point play by Deni Avdija allowed Washington to reduce that deficit to 10 points after 12 minutes of play.
Tyus Jones’ jump shot from long range leveled the game at 52 with 1:46 left before halftime, but the Spurs responded, hitting consecutive 3-pointers from Vassell and Osman. Kuzma’s jump shot at the buzzer trimmed San Antonio’s lead to 58-54 at the break.
Osman led all scorers with 13 points in the first half, while Wembanyama had 12 and Vassell scored 11 for the Spurs. Tyus Jones led Washington with nine points over the first two quarters.
San Antonio extended its lead to 10 points on four different occasions in the third quarter, the last coming after a dunk by Vassell with 2:39 to go in the period.
The Wizards fought back to trail by just four before two free throws by Blake Wesley granted the Spurs a 93-87 edge heading into the final quarter.

Wolves C Rudy Gobert (Personal) Uncertain for Game 2
The Impact of Rudy Gobert's Absence Against the Nuggets in Game 2
Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert’s availability is questionable for the upcoming Game 2 happening on Monday night in Denver for personal reasons.
In the opener of the Western Conference semifinal series on Saturday, Gobert played a significant role by contributing six points, grabbing 13 rebounds, making three blocks, and assisting three times in the team’s 106-99 victory.
Being a three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and a three-time All-Star, Gobert maintained an average of 14.0 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks in 76 games during the regular season.
Standing tall at 7-foot-1, the 31-year-old Gobert has an overall average of 12.7 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks throughout his career in 757 games for the Utah Jazz (2013-22) and the Timberwolves.
If Gobert is unable to play against the reigning champions, Naz Reid, who won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year this season, may step into the starting lineup.
