Less than two weeks remains until the NBA trade deadline, and there has been a significant shakeup involving two Eastern Conference teams. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski announced on Tuesday that the Miami Heat has secured the services of guard Terry Rozier in exchange for Kyle Lowry and a 2027 first-round pick.

After the Charlotte Hornets secured a 128-125 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves, wherein Karl-Anthony Towns amassed 62 points, this move took place. In the current season, Charlotte holds a 10-31 win/loss record, placing them at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings once again.

Since the 2015-2016 season, the Hornets have not seen any playoff action and have managed a combined 295-375 record over this period.

Charlotte Hasn’t Seen the Playoffs Since the 2015-2016 Season

The franchise had renewed hope when they drafted the sensation LaMelo Ball as the third overall pick in the 2020 draft. Despite contending with injuries, particularly in the last two seasons, Ball has shown steady improvement in his scoring abilities. Having been limited to merely 36 games in the 2022-2023 season, Ball secured a 5-year $260 million extension during the recent offseason.

Following Ball, Charlotte acquired a top lottery pick three years later, selecting former Alabama forward Brandon Miller as the second overall pick in 2023. Registering his third consecutive game with over 20 points, Miller has found his rhythm after a period of inconsistent performance. It is yet to be determined whether Miller can be the cornerstone player for the Hornets, but the losses continue to accumulate for Charlotte.

Ranked fourth in the Southeast Division, the Hornets have been grappling with multiple player injuries. Forward Gordon Hayward has been sidelined for an extended period, featuring in only 25 games this season.

Similarly, Cody Martin has only appeared in eight games, while both Mark Williams and Nick Richards, the team’s big men, are also recovering from injuries.

The Hornets’ Luck Hasn’t Changed Despite Acquisition of Ball and Miller

Following the recent sale of the Charlotte Hornets by Michael Jordan, there are indications that Gabe Plotkin and Rick Schnall are poised to sell and rebuild the team. Although this information has not been confirmed, it appears to be a plausible course of action. The Oklahoma City Thunder serves as a glaring example of a team that achieved success after a rebuilding phase.

Dubbed the laughing stock of the NBA, Charlotte continues to be among the weakest teams on both ends of the court. Ranked 27th in offensive rating, Charlotte averages a mere 108.8 points per game with a 45.9 percent field goal shooting percentage.

Moreover, they allow close to 120 points per game to their opponents, with a dismal 40 percent three-point shooting concession rate. With inefficiencies in rebounding, it would be wise for the Hornets to embark on a rebuild.

Terry Rozier, aged 29, is embarking on his 9th NBA season. Having departed from the Boston Celtics to join Charlotte as a free agent five years ago, Rozier evolved into a standout player. Throughout 294 games with the Hornets, the guard maintained an average of 20.1 points, 4.7 assists, and 4.3 rebounds.

In the current season, he has achieved career-high averages of 23.2 points, 3.9 rebounds, 6.6 assists, and 1.1 steals, all while maintaining a 45.9 percent field goal shooting rate. He is a skilled and tough player who aligns with Miami’s ethos.

Additionally, Rozier has reached the highest usage rate of his career (26.8 %) and is recognized for his ability to perform under pressure. In fact, according to the NBA, Rozier ranks 6th in the league in terms of the highest clutch effective field goal percentage since the 1996-1997 season.

With Lowry’s performance declining, Rozier’s fearlessness in shot-taking is beneficial; he frequently executes pull-up three-pointers, converting nearly 40 percent of them.

For the Heat, this is a shrewd move, particularly given the long-standing trade talks concerning veteran Kyle Lowry. While Miami missed out on acquiring Damian Lillard, Rozier represents a substantial enhancement for the team’s backcourt. In his prime, Rozier exhibits consistency, an upward trajectory, and the capability to contribute minutes reliably.

Terry Rozier Will Join Tyler Herro in the Backcourt

Rozier will assume the starting point guard role for the Heat, joining forces with Tyler Herro, Jimmy Butler, Caleb Martin, and Bam Adebayo. As I’ve stated in previous years, the Heat should not be underestimated.

Currently boasting a 24-19 record, even with Jimmy Butler being sidelined due to injury for a substantial period, this lineup is formidable and raises Miami’s competitive prospects in the Eastern Conference. The team’s odds of winning an NBA Championship stand at +4000 on DraftKings.

In summary, Scary Terry outshines Lowry, who is 37 years old. Drawing from my observations of Rozier during his time in Boston, he is an explosive guard and should thrive in pick-and-roll scenarios alongside Bam Adebayo.

Unafraid to drive into the paint, Rozier will ignite the Heat’s offense and provide secondary playmaking. Furthermore, the Heat currently ranks 20th in offensive rating, with an average of 113.4 points per game. Their assist percentage ranks 9th and should benefit from Rozier’s capabilities.

His defensive skills, an area where he is weakest, can be refined under the guidance of head coach Erik Spoelstra during his tenure in Miami. While this trade appears promising on paper, its efficacy in integrating Rozier with Tyler Herro in the backcourt and alongside returning Jimmy Butler remains to be seen.

The seasoned Kyle Lowry is averaging 8.2 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 4 assists across 37 games this season. A former NBA Champion with the Toronto Raptors, he played a pivotal role in Miami’s journey to the 2023 Finals against the Denver Nuggets.

Now in his 19th NBA season, Lowry, a six-time All-Star, has represented Memphis, Houston, Toronto, and Miami. He has recently been excluded from the starting lineup, facing challenges over the past five games.

With Lowry on an expiring contract worth $29 million, Rozier has three years remaining on his 4-year $96 million contract. Earning $23 million this year, he is set to earn $24.9 million in 2024-2026 and $26.6 million in 2025-2026.

Lowry’s departure will be felt by his Miami teammates. Bam Adebayo described Lowry as a “brother,” while Kevin Love underscored the difficulty of losing a “hall of fame, championship pedigree point guard” (Clutch points). However, it presents an opportunity for Love and other Miami players to step up.
