With the high school postseason just around the corner, Texas’ softball catchers are showcasing immense talent and skill.

This year, we’ve seen extraordinary performances from seniors to freshmen, all contributing to their teams’ success with exceptional offensive and defensive stats. From batting averages that seem almost unreal to game-changing defensive plays, these players are setting a high standard for excellence.

The spotlight now shines on Texas catchers, who have proven themselves to be vital assets on the field. Featuring rising stars and experienced leaders, these athletes continue to deliver awe-inspiring moments throughout the season. Here are some of the standout catchers making waves in the Lone Star State.

Texas High School Softball Top Catchers of 2025

Hutton “LuLu” Adrian, soph., Melissa

Considered one of the finest teams in Texas, Melissa features one of the state’s top sophomore catchers. After an incredible freshman year batting .509 with 22 home runs, Adrian is having an even more impressive sophomore season. In 31 games, she is hitting .641 with 15 home runs, 11 doubles, four triples, and 49 RBI, along with 38 runs scored, 27 walks, a .733 on-base percentage, a 1.462 slugging percentage, and a 2.195 OPS.

Kalyn Benavides, soph., Ganado

After an impressive freshman season batting .432 with four home runs in 31 games, Benavides has elevated her performance significantly as a sophomore. In far fewer at-bats, she is now hitting .574 (39-for-68) with eight doubles, one triple, seven home runs, and 39 RBI. She has drawn 19 walks and holds a .685 on-base percentage, while boasting a .994 fielding percentage with just one error and 171 putouts.

Hailey Jones-Calais, jr., Spring

While it’s hard to predict what her senior year will entail, Jones-Calais has already established herself as one of Texas’ finest catchers. Currently, she is batting .679 (38-for-56) with nine doubles, three triples, 15 home runs, and 54 RBI through 24 games. Not only has she scored 47 runs and drawn 24 walks, but she has struck out only once in 84 plate appearances. Defensively, she’s caught seven runners and made three errors across 97 innings.

Riley Cassiday, sr., El Paso Pebble Hills

Cassiday is a powerhouse in the middle of Pebble Hills’ batting order. The team’s fortunes have closely mirrored her performance this season, as she wraps up her varsity career with a notable .500 batting average, featuring 12 home runs, four doubles, two triples, 43 RBI, and 43 runs scored. She’s also contributed significantly on defense during 100.1 innings behind home plate.

Mackenzie Clark, sr., Karnes City

Among the toughest outs in the state, Clark has excelled at the plate and on the basepaths. She’s currently batting .698 (44-for-63) with eight home runs, 11 doubles, and four triples, driving in 34 RBI in 21 games. Clark has drawn ten walks, stolen 29 bases, and struck out only twice. Behind the plate, she’s recorded 16 baserunners thrown out and has picked off two.

Megan DeWitt, sr., Denton Guyer

As a key member of the Lady Wildcats’ strong pitching staff, DeWitt has been instrumental in catching some remarkable performances this season. Demonstrating versatility, this senior has also made a meaningful impact with the bat, hitting .411 (30-for-73) with five home runs, six doubles, one triple, and 25 RBI.

Mia Dominguez, jr., Socorro

The Lady Bulldogs are rich in talent, and Dominguez is certainly among the stars. Since making her varsity debut as a freshman, she has maintained a strong offensive presence, batting .470 with 12 home runs in her sophomore year. This season, she is hitting .500 through 25 games, accumulating seven home runs, 10 doubles, four triples, 27 RBI, and scoring 39 runs. With excellent plate discipline, Dominguez has drawn 31 walks and swiped 15 bases, reaching base in 66.3 percent of her at-bats.

Kendall Drewry, jr., Frisco Lebanon Trail

A formidable presence on the field, Drewry is playing a vital role this season for the Lady Trail Blazers, who currently hold a 15-5-2 record. She has participated in all 22 games, batting .646 with eight home runs, 14 doubles, three triples, and 35 RBI, along with 40 runs scored and 13 stolen bases. Striking out only twice all year, she features a .712 on-base percentage, a 1.323 slugging percentage, and a 2.035 OPS. On defense, she has a .983 fielding percentage with just three errors in 172 chances and has recorded 23 assists.

Kaiya Fabela, sr., Keller

Batting in the core of Keller’s lineup, Fabela is maximizing her senior season. Currently, she’s hitting .468 (44-for-94) with eight home runs, 13 doubles, two triples, and 48 RBI. A stellar defender, she has yet to be charged with an error this season, having managed just five errors over her entire four-year varsity career.

Mia Gagliardi, sr., Kingwood

Playing behind the plate for one of the top teams in the state this year, Gagliardi is an integral piece in Kingwood’s success. So far, her stats reflect her prowess: she’s hitting .447 (38-for-85) with nine home runs, eight doubles, one triple, and 36 RBIs. Additionally, she’s crossed home plate 29 times and has been a reliable defensive asset, contributing to her team’s impressive 25-4-1 record.

Ryann Harris, fr., Forney

In her varsity debut, Harris made an immediate impact by hitting home runs in her first three games, as well as four in her first five and five in her initial seven matchups. She maintained her strong performance recently, hitting home runs in her last two games as well. The freshman is currently helping to lead one of the state’s top teams with a .356 batting average (26-for-73), alongside 10 home runs, six doubles, one triple, and 31 RBIs.

Angelina Hernandez, sr., Mathis

Though she takes on various roles for the Lady Pirates, Hernandez has been particularly effective as a catcher, where her batting shines. After 21 games, she boasts an impressive .571 average (40-for-70) with six home runs, 18 doubles, four triples, and 31 RBIs. Having scored 36 runs, she holds a .634 on-base percentage, a 1.200 slugging percentage, and a 1.834 OPS. Additionally, she has stolen 15 bases this season, committing just one error (.992 fielding percentage).

Cienna Hernandez, jr., El Paso Ysleta

With two home runs in her latest outing, Hernandez continues her impressive performance at the plate this season. Across 30 games and 83 at-bats, she is hitting .578 (48-for-83) with 16 home runs, 10 doubles, six triples, and 48 RBIs. She has crossed home plate 53 times and taken 19 walks, maintaining a .660 on-base percentage, a 1.422 slugging percentage, and a 2.082 OPS.

Madelyn Hickey, sr., Burleson Centennial

The Lady Spartans are enjoying a stellar season, and Hickey, contributing both as a catcher and a middle-of-the-lineup hitter, has played a crucial role in their success. This senior is currently slugging 1.222 and holds a .568 average through 29 games. She has hit 11 home runs, along with 12 doubles and four triples, accumulating 51 RBIs. Defensively, she’s made one error and recorded eight assists behind the plate.

Joni Jackson, sr., Breckenridge

It’s remarkable to consider the season that Joni Jackson is experiencing. Despite the standout performances from other catchers statewide, Jackson seems to be operating on a different level. The senior is hitting .758 (50-for-66) through 28 games, alongside 20 home runs, 16 doubles, three triples, and 53 RBIs. She has scored 50 runs, drawn 26 walks, and struck out only three times all year, while maintaining a .828 on-base percentage, a 2.828 OPS, and slugging 2.000. In her 141 innings behind the plate, she has caught nine runners stealing and made just two errors.

Abby Lynch-Buxton, jr., Aubrey

In what has been a standout season for the Lady Chaparrals, who hold a record of 26-3, Lynch-Buxton is shining. She’s hitting .514 (38-for-74) with 10 home runs, nine doubles, and four triples, totaling 32 RBIs thus far. She has scored 49 runs and boasts a .640 on-base percentage, while demonstrating solid skills behind the plate, remaining error-free this season.

Sophia Lundstrom, sr., Lamar Consolidated

Given Sophia Lundstrom’s impressive offensive output this season, opposing teams might have been wiser to simply walk her each time she steps to the plate. With 12 walks through 24 games, Lundstrom is hitting an astounding .750 (60-for-80) with a .789 on-base percentage, and a slugging percentage of 1.238, resulting in a 2.026 OPS. She has recorded eight home runs, 11 doubles, and two triples while knocking in 33 RBIs and scoring 57 runs. Additionally, she has stolen 17 bases and boasts a .984 fielding percentage.

Lydia Pesterfield, sr., Lubbock-Cooper

Pesterfield’s last name couldn’t be more spot-on for a player of her caliber at Lubbock-Cooper. Her skills create a challenge for opponents. Having played more innings than most catchers in this list, she has upheld a strong defensive record with 16 assists and a .973 fielding percentage. Offensively, she is batting .511 over 33 games, with 10 home runs, 18 doubles, one triple, and 51 RBIs, also scoring 31 times. Additionally, she has drawn 28 walks, yielding a robust .629 on-base percentage.

Jae Jae Phillips, sr., Troy

Phillips, playing both as a leadoff hitter and a catcher for the Trojanettes, has ramped up her home run production in the latter part of the season. Completing the regular season, she hit .553, with 15 home runs, 10 doubles, and three triples, while driving in 38 runs.

Joleigh Richards, jr., Midlothian Heritage

While Richards is steady defensively, she garners significant attention for her batting skills. This gifted junior has 13 assists from her position this year and has proven to be a formidable presence at the plate, boasting a .464 average, alongside nine home runs, 16 doubles, three triples, and 45 RBIs. The Lady Jaguars are performing well with a record of 26-7.

Claire Schreiner, sr., Frisco Wakeland

After an impressive junior year that included 19 doubles and six home runs, Schreiner has shifted her powerful bat into high gear for 2025. Over 26 games, this senior has hit 16 homers and nine doubles while batting .467. She also boasts a triple, 46 RBIs, and 35 runs scored, showcasing her defensive skills by committing only two errors with 23 assists.

Chayney Snelson, jr., Bushland

Following a breakout sophomore year where she hit .518 with 17 doubles and seven home runs, Snelson is replicating that success in 2025. In 28 games, she is batting .462 with eight home runs, 12 doubles, one triple, and 36 RBIs, while also accruing 30 assists behind the plate.

Abby Van Volkenburgh, sr., Plano John Paul II

With John Paul II on a 10-game winning streak, Van Volkenburgh has been riding a hitting streak of her own for 15 games. She has been a vital contributor to the offense this season, holding a .432 batting average (32-for-74) with five home runs, five doubles, and 27 RBIs while providing solid defense behind the plate.

Sophie Vlasak, soph., Houston Memorial

As one of the state’s top sophomores, Vlasak boasts a .977 fielding percentage this season, having committed just three errors while accumulating 15 assists and participating in four double plays. She ranks among the state’s leaders in home runs for her position, cranking out 13 in her first 24 games. Vlasak has a batting average of .472, alongside nine doubles, 41 RBIs, and 29 runs scored.

Aubry Way, sr., Arp

The Lady Tigers are pursuing a remarkable 30-win season, with Way’s impressive offensive skills playing a key role. This senior catcher is batting .568 this year, alongside 11 doubles, one triple, and six home runs for a total of 58 RBIs in 29 games. Her defensive play has also improved, now holding a .964 fielding percentage and recording 11 assists.

    2026 Englewood Cherry Creek DL offer Tufanua Umu-Cais

    Englewood (Colo.) Cherry Creek defensive lineman Tufanua Ionatana Umu-Cais has received an invitation to participate in the 2026 Polynesian Bowl, as announced on Tuesday.

    The standout player from Colorado expressed his excitement about this honor.

    “Being selected to the Polynesian Bowl is a huge honor,” stated Umu-Cais. “It’s a recognition of all the hard work, dedication, and sacrifices I’ve made, and it means even more knowing how much pride and history are connected to the game. I have seen many players in the Poly Bowl and even players that are in the league now. It is truly special to be a part of something like that.”

    Umu-Cais is eager to immerse himself in the experience in Hawaii.

    “I’m extremely excited,” he said. “The Polynesian culture is so rich, full of pride, family, and tradition. I’m looking forward to learning more, meeting new people, and embracing everything the experience has to offer. I am extremely excited to immerse myself in the Poly community because it’s my culture. I can’t wait to really put on for my family as well as my community.”

    This will mark his first visit to the Aloha State.

    “I haven’t been to Hawaii yet, so this will be my first time,” Umu-Cais shared. “I’m really looking forward to it—the beauty, the culture, and the experience of a lifetime.”

    Additionally, Umu-Cais is enthusiastic about the opportunity to compete alongside some of the nation’s top talents.

    “I do not know the roster yet and what players are going to be attending, but I look forward to meeting them and also competing,” he noted.

    The roster for the 2026 Polynesian Bowl includes early invitees such as Immanuel Iheanacho, Faizon Brandon, DJ Jacobs, Myson Johnson-Cook, Brandon Arrington, Chris Henry Jr., Kendre Harrison, Cederian Morgan, Honor Fa’alave-Johnson, Xavier Griffin, Kelsey Adams, Jamier Brown, George Toia, and Jett Washington.

    The 2027 Polynesian Bowl will feature early invites including Elijah Haven, Trent Seaborn, and Marcus Fakatou.

    Launched in 2017, the Polynesian Bowl saw its first Offensive MVP awarded to former Stanford all-purpose back Connor Wedington, while Buffalo Bills defensive lineman A.J. Epenesa earned the Defensive MVP. The following year, Kyler Gordon from the Chicago Bears and Tanner McKee from the Philadelphia Eagles were named Co-MVPs.

    The 2019 contest awarded co-MVP honors to Daniel Heimuli, a linebacker from Arizona, and Puka Nacua of the Los Angeles Rams. In 2020, Sol-Jay Maiava, the quarterback from BYU, and Meki Pei from Hawaii won co-MVP awards.

    The 2021 edition saw Travis Hunter from Colorado take home the offensive MVP title, while Jaishawn Barham of Michigan earned defensive MVP honors. In 2023, Nico Iamaleava, a quarterback from Tennessee, was named offensive MVP, and linebacker Andrew Harris garnered defensive MVP accolades.

    The 2024 game awarded offensive MVP to Mike Matthews from Tennessee and defensive MVP to David Stone of Oklahoma. Lastly, the 2025 contest featured co-MVPs on offense in Husan Longstreet from USC and Dakorien Moore from Oregon, while 2026 defensive lineman Deuce Geralds earned the defensive MVP honor.

    The tenth Polynesian Bowl is scheduled for January 16, 2026, in Honolulu and will be broadcasted by NFL Network.

    DMV Hoop Session Interviews Suburban All Star Blake Harper

    Blake Harper, a standout freshman basketball player from Howard University, confirmed his transfer to Creighton University on Sunday through social media.

    Harper, who garnered both the MEAC Player and Rookie of the Year honors, shared his decision on Instagram @_bharp.

    “you can’t say i ain’t earn it??” he wrote. “RDJ”

    A Washington, D.C. native who previously played at Gonzaga College High School, Harper entered the transfer portal on March 24 and ultimately chose Creighton, turning down offers from LSU and Ohio State. Standing 6-foot-8, he also had the choice to return to Howard.

    Harper is set to join a Creighton team coached by Greg McDermott, who led the Bluejays to an impressive 25-11 overall record, including a 15-5 performance in the Big East Conference during the 2024-25 season. The Bluejays secured an NCAA Tournament spot and concluded the season ranked 24th in the USA Today Coaches poll.

    Throughout the 2024-25 season, Harper made an impact at Howard, starting in all 32 games and averaging 19.5 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 3.4 assists, contributing to the Bison’s 12-20 record, which included a 7-7 performance in the MEAC.

    The Michigan high school baseball season has kicked off, and we’re here to deliver weekly rankings of the top teams across the state during the spring and summer months.

    Check out this week’s standout teams in the Mitten region.

    Michigan High School Baseball Rankings: Apr. 29

    1. Bay City Western (12-1)

    Bay City Western triumphed over Flint Powers Catholic 9-0 last Thursday but faced a setback with a 4-1 loss against Midland on Monday. The Warriors are gearing up for their next games against Lapeer on May 1 and Grand Blanc on May 5.

    2. De La Salle (12-2)

    The Pilots swept Auburn Hills Avondale on Saturday, winning both games 15-0, with game one ending after four innings and game two after three. De La Salle’s next challenge comes in the form of a doubleheader against Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice on April 30.

    3. Northville (14-1)

    The Mustangs notched wins against Hartland and two over Utica last week, followed by a victory against Howell on Monday. Northville is poised for a rematch against Howell on April 30.

    4. Dakota (11-4)

    After a heavy 10-0 loss to Rochester Adams last weekend, the Cougars bounced back with decisive wins against Sterling Heights Stevenson, claiming victories of 10-0 on Monday and 14-2 on Tuesday. Dakota is slated to face Stevenson two more times to wrap up their four-game series.

    5. Birmingham Brother Rice (11-6)

    The Warriors pulled off a sweep against Detroit Edison last week (2-0) and secured a 10-6 victory over Hartland on Friday. Up next, Brother Rice will face rival De La Salle for a doubleheader on April 30.

    6. Grosse Pointe South (18-2)

    With a win over Detroit Edison on Saturday, the Blue Devils set a new school record with their 15th consecutive victory. Although they stumbled against Anchor Bat on Monday, they have a chance for revenge on April 30 and May 1.

    7. Saline (15-1)

    The Hornets swept Chelsea in two games on Saturday and achieved a similar result against Ann Arbor Huron on Monday. With a five-game winning streak, Saline is stepping into the final match of their three-game series against Ann Arbor Huron on April 30.

    8. Orchard Lake St. Mary’s (10-8)

    OLSM traveled to Ohio over spring break, where they faced three games: an 8-7 defeat against Anthony Wayne, a 3-2 loss to Defiance on Saturday, and an 8-3 loss to Perrysburg later that day. The Eaglets are set to resume their Catholic League schedule on April 30 with a doubleheader against U of D Jesuit.

    9. Romeo (16-2)

    The Bulldogs are on an impressive seven-game winning streak, recently sweeping Stoney Creek on Saturday. They’ll look to maintain their momentum with a visit to Utica Ford next on May 1.

    10. Sterling Heights Stevenson (12-2)

    Stevenson is riding a three-game winning streak after defeating Anchor Bay twice on Saturday and mercying Dakota on Monday. The Titans will meet Dakota again on April 30 and May 1 before a brief pause, then face Utica Ford on May 5.

    11. Hudsonville (12-2)

    The Eagles wrapped up last week with a strong 5-1 record, including victories against Jenison and Rockford. Hudsonville is set to take on Rockford again on May 1 before hosting a doubleheader against Maple Valley the following day.

    12. Jenison (8-2)

    The Wildcats dominated Muskegon with a 15-0 win but narrowly lost to Hudsonville 9-8 last week. They split a doubleheader against Caledonia on Tuesday (W, 10-0; L, 3-2), with a rubber match scheduled for May 1.

    13. New Boston Huron (16-0)

    The Chiefs kept their unbeaten record intact last week with wins over Allen Park and Milan. They are set to play Flat Rock next on April 30 and have a matchup with Dearborn Divine Child on May 2.

    14. Detroit Catholic Central (10-6)

    The Shamrocks are currently on a four-game winning streak, most recently sweeping Portage Central on Tuesday. Up next, Detroit Catholic Central will face St. Francis de Sales in a doubleheader on April 30.

    15. West Bloomfield (8-3)

    The Lakers split a doubleheader with Rochester last week and followed that up with back-to-back wins against Groves, including an 8-1 victory on Tuesday. West Bloomfield will meet Groves once more on May 1 before taking on Stoney Creek on May 3.

    16. Dexter (13-6)

    The Dreadnaughts have struggled recently, dropping four of their last six games, including both matches in a doubleheader against Ann Arbor Skyline on Monday. They have another opportunity against Skyline on April 30 before heading to Adrian on May 3.

    17. Woodhaven (15-5)

    The Warriors have secured consecutive victories after experiencing two losses in a row, with their latest triumph coming against Dearborn Edsel Ford, winning 2-1 in a dramatic nine-inning game on Monday. Woodhaven’s upcoming opponents include Wyandotte on April 30, followed by Taylor on May 1.

    18. Rochester Adams (15-4)

    Rochester Adams holds a 2-2 record over its last four games, having recently suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Stoney Creek on Tuesday. The Highlanders have another chance to face Stoney Creek on May 2 before taking on Grosse Pointe North in a doubleheader on May 3.

    19. Trenton (13-3)

    The Trojans went 2-1 at the 9th Bob Kreszyn Classic on Saturday, achieving victories over Wayland and Flint Powers Catholic, with their only setback against Utica Ford. Additionally, Trenton triumphed over Taylor on Monday, and their next matchup is against Dearborn Edsel Ford on April 30.

    20. Midland (6-2)

    Midland upset the top-ranked team in the state, securing a 4-1 victory over Bay City Western on Monday. Despite a number of canceled games this season, the Chemics’ schedule is about to heat up, starting with a game against Davison on April 30.

    21. Pontiac Notre Dame Prep (9-5)

    Pontiac Notre Dame Prep faced a tough doubleheader against Flushing on Saturday, resulting in two losses, but bounced back on Monday with a solid 9-2 win over U of D Jesuit.

    22. Detroit Western (13-5)

    After a 12-7 win against Grosse Pointe North on Saturday, the Cowboys suffered an 8-3 loss to Grosse Pointe South later that day. However, they regained their momentum with a 5-2 victory over Cass Tech on Tuesday. Detroit Western is set to face Livonia Stevenson next on April 30.

    23. Grand Ledge (13-5)

    The Comets faced a tough defeat in a doubleheader against Okemos on Monday, breaking a four-game winning streak. Grand Ledge will aim to bounce back during a doubleheader against Lansing Everett on May 1.

    24. Mattawan (8-2-3)

    Mattawan has triumphed in four of its last five outings, although they faced a setback against Grandville, losing 4-3 on Saturday. The Wildcats will take on Gull Lake next in a doubleheader on April 30.

    25. Allen Park (8-5)

    The Jaguars managed to avoid a third consecutive loss by overpowering Lincoln Park with a decisive 15-0 win on Monday. Allen Park will look to build on this momentum as they prepare to host Taylor for a doubleheader on April 30.
