Surging Clippers Set for Showdown with Timberwolves

Paul George and the Los Angeles Clippers continue their blazing play when they clash with the Minnesota Timberwolves in Minneapolis on Sunday night.
The Clippers have secured victory in their last three games and eight of their past nine, with George shining in Friday’s 128-119 win over the Memphis Grizzlies, sinking 7 of 10 attempts from beyond the arc, scoring a season-high 37 points.
“(George) is in a great rhythm right now,” said Los Angeles coach Tyronn Lue. “Ten 3s again tonight. I wish he’d take three or four more.”
Throughout January, George has been averaging 27.6 points while shooting an impressive 55.0 percent from the field and 50.7 percent from 3-point range. His scoring average of 23.8 points per game this season is second only to Kawhi Leonard‘s 23.9 on the team.
Leonard, who has made 20 of 34 shots from the floor (58.8 percent) in the last two games, has played a pivotal role in the Clippers’ rise in the Western Conference standings.
Lue emphasized the importance of being able to secure wins in various styles, stating, “Just being able to win in different ways. You’ve got to be able to win pretty, you’ve got to be able to win ugly and win whatever is in between that. You’ve just got to be able to win games.”
The Clippers, led by George and Leonard, will take on the Timberwolves for the first of four matchups this season.
Minnesota’s convincing 116-93 win over the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday saw Rudy Gobert contribute 24 points and 17 rebounds in his return from a one-game injury absence, supported by Karl-Anthony Towns‘ 23 points and eight boards.
The Timberwolves, boasting a 15-2 home record this season, shot 55.0 percent from the field in their latest win.
According to Timberwolves coach Chris Finch, “We did a really good job of finding Rudy early, and KAT’s drives (were) quick and clean and he was able to use his size and strength to his advantage,” commending his team’s effective game plan.
Minnesota has been performing well for the majority of the season, with Towns averaging 21.8 points and 9.0 rebounds and Gobert contributing 13.1 points and 12.2 rebounds.
Gobert mentioned, “We want to see each other succeed. We want to be able to win together. That’s unique. In this league, a lot of teams have egos. I think we’re both in a place in our career now where it’s about winning. Nothing else matters.”
The comfortable win over Portland gave coach Finch the opportunity to rest his stars, with Gobert, Anthony Edwards, and Mike Conley not playing in the fourth quarter.
Additionally, no starter played more than 28 minutes in the game. Gobert, with an average of 17.3 points and 13.7 rebounds, played a significant role in helping the Timberwolves win two of the three meetings against Los Angeles last season.

Wolves C Rudy Gobert (Personal) Uncertain for Game 2
The Impact of Rudy Gobert's Absence Against the Nuggets in Game 2
Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert’s availability is questionable for the upcoming Game 2 happening on Monday night in Denver for personal reasons.
In the opener of the Western Conference semifinal series on Saturday, Gobert played a significant role by contributing six points, grabbing 13 rebounds, making three blocks, and assisting three times in the team’s 106-99 victory.
Being a three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and a three-time All-Star, Gobert maintained an average of 14.0 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks in 76 games during the regular season.
Standing tall at 7-foot-1, the 31-year-old Gobert has an overall average of 12.7 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks throughout his career in 757 games for the Utah Jazz (2013-22) and the Timberwolves.
If Gobert is unable to play against the reigning champions, Naz Reid, who won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year this season, may step into the starting lineup.
