As the regular season winds down, the Phoenix Suns and the New Orleans Pelicans find themselves entering the pivotal phase of their remaining eight games.

In crucial showdowns down the stretch, the two teams are set to clash twice, starting with a matchup on Monday night in New Orleans. The outcome could have a major impact on their positions in the Western Conference playoff standings.

The Pelicans, currently in fifth place with a record of 45-29, hold a two-game advantage over the seventh-seeded Suns, with the Dallas Mavericks sandwiched in between.

New Orleans is embarking on the latter half of a six-game stretch at home, which has seen them face off against top-tier opponents. The run included a loss to Oklahoma City, a triumph against Milwaukee, and a 104-92 defeat to Boston on Saturday.

“These are playoff-like games that we relish,” Pelicans coach Willie Green said. “Oklahoma, Milwaukee, Boston: all tough teams and they all came down to execution. Pretty close games.”

“(Saturday’s game) got away from us a little bit, but we battled back. And this is what you want: you want an opportunity to play against the best teams and see where you stack up as we continue to prepare.”

Despite leading the NBA-leading Celtics 37-28 after the first quarter, New Orleans struggled offensively, scoring just 20 points in the second quarter, followed by 11 in the third, and ultimately trailing by as many as 22 points in the final period.

“They upped their intensity and we did not match it,” said Pelicans forward Zion Williamson, who scored 25 points in a career-high 40 minutes. “When we started to match it, the game was out of hand at that point.”

Meanwhile, Phoenix’s performances have been erratic during their recent road trip, marked by contrasting results.

Following a commanding 25-point win and a loss in San Antonio, the Suns defeated the reigning champions, Denver Nuggets, 104-97, before succumbing to a 128-103 defeat against the Oklahoma City Thunder, their second-worst loss of the season.

Labeling the display as “embarrassing,” Suns coach Frank Vogel expressed disappointment as his team trailed by as much as 29 points against OKC.

“We’ve all got to own it and we’ve all got to be better and we’ve all got to handle success better,” Vogel said. “It’s unacceptable to get blown out. These games are so important.”

With a challenging schedule ahead where every remaining game is against high-caliber opponents, the Suns face a daunting task. The Pelicans, on the other hand, have navigated through the toughest stretch of their homestand but still have six contests against winning teams in their schedule.

“We’ve had different lineups with guys getting injured, coming in and out of the lineup,” Suns forward Kevin Durant said. “For the most part, we understand each other. We see each other’s tendencies. That’s what you want from a group is to start to understand each other more. We’re doing that.”

“We’ve got eight more games left. Hopefully, we get an opportunity to play in the postseason.”

Having only faced each other once this season, with the Suns prevailing 123-109 on January 19 in New Orleans, their upcoming rematch is scheduled for April 7 in Phoenix.
