Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders has rapidly established himself as a force in the world of recruiting surprises.
This talent is particularly evident during the lead-up to the 2025 NFL Draft, as both Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders are in the running to be selected as the No. 1 overall pick.
However, they are not the only significant recruiting triumphs for Sanders.
Let’s take a closer look at Coach Prime’s most notable achievements on the recruiting front:
1. Travis Hunter, Collins Hill; Jackson State (2022)
Coming out of Collins Hill (Georgia) in the 2022 recruiting class, Travis Hunter was recognized as a once-in-a-generation talent and the premier recruit nationwide.
Standing at 6-foot-1 and weighing 165 pounds, he was ranked as the top wide receiver and cornerback in the country—an incredible distinction that he remarkably upheld during his college career.
Initially committed to Florida State, Hunter made a stunning switch to Deion Sanders and FCS Jackson State on the first day of the early signing period, marking one of the most unforgettable and shocking moments in college recruiting history.
“This is the biggest signing day moment in the history of college football,” remarked Steve Wiltfong, former director of national recruiting for 247Sports.
This decision also sent a clear message across the college football landscape.
Coach Prime was determined on the recruiting trail, showing he wasn’t afraid to take talent from his alma mater.
After a single season at Jackson State, Hunter made the move to Colorado alongside Sanders, where he would ultimately clinch the 2024 Heisman Trophy, the 2024 Walter Camp Award, AP College Football Player of the Year, and both the Bednarik Award (best defensive player) and Biletnikoff Award (best wide receiver).
He is generally regarded as the finest two-way player in modern college football and has received accolades as one of the top ten college football players of all time.
2. Shedeur Sanders, Trinity Christian; Jackson State (2021)
Deion Sanders’ second most significant recruiting achievement has the distinction of being notably straightforward.
Shedeur Sanders, a four-star quarterback out of Trinity Christian (Texas) and Deion’s son, was highly sought after in the 2021 recruiting class, attracting over 20 prominent scholarship offers.
With offers from schools including Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Oregon, and Tennessee, he ultimately decided to join his father at Jackson State.
Initially, some questioned whether the Sanders family’s influence was just a passing phase or if they could genuinely affect change in college football.
It became clear that Sanders and his sons were indeed transformative figures in the sport.
Shedeur claimed the Jerry Rice Award, which is presented to the leading freshman in FCS football, before later winning the Deacon Jones Trophy as a sophomore, recognizing him as the best player among HBCUs.
After two successful years, he followed his father to Colorado, where he has cemented his status as one of the premier quarterbacks in college football, winning the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award as a senior. This award is bestowed upon the top quarterback who exemplifies both character and athletic excellence.
Sanders is now in the conversation for being the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s NFL draft.
3. Cormani McClain, Lakeland; Colorado (2023)
Just a year after adding Travis Hunter, the college football community was keenly aware of Sanders’ potential to reel in another major recruit.
In another consecutive recruiting cycle, Sanders again had his sights set on the nation’s top cornerback.
This time, it was Cormani McClain from Lakeland.
Although initially committed to Miami before the early signing period, the 6-foot-2, 175-pound defensive standout did not sign and kept his options open, considering Alabama, Colorado, Florida, and Miami until mid-January.
By that point, speculation began to circulate that he might become Sanders’ annual surprise recruit.
“I play DB and Coach Prime is the best DB. I wanna be in the same shoes, same predicament, gold jacket, everything,” McClain shared with 247Sports. “Get coached by the best DB. Why not?”
Following a challenging season at Colorado, McClain made the move to Florida, igniting a verbal dispute between Sanders and McClain regarding his mindset and work ethic compared to his experiences during his time in Boulder.
Despite the disappointment of McClain’s tenure under Sanders, it reinforced the idea that Travis Hunter’s commitment was no mere coincidence in the recruiting landscape.
Coach Prime was clearly intent on establishing himself in the recruiting arena, set on acquiring five-star talent at every turn.
4. Jordan Seaton, IMG Academy; Colorado (2024)
After just one year at Colorado, Sanders boasted a wealth of skill-position talent; however, he voiced concerns about the need to improve his offensive line.
While the transfer portal offered a potential quick fix, during the 2024 recruiting cycle, it became evident that Coach Prime was setting his sights on adding a five-star offensive lineman.
Enter Jordan Seaton, a five-star recruit from IMG Academy in Florida.
The 6-foot-5, 287-pound tackle was acknowledged not only as the nation’s top prospect at his position but also ranked among the top 20 overall recruits, receiving scholarship offers from 33 major programs.
In December, Seaton pledged his commitment to Colorado over Alabama, Maryland, Ohio State, and Tennessee.
However, this time it was Sanders who faced a near loss of a key recruit due to a surprising late twist.
Seaton chose not to sign his National Letter of Intent on the initial day of the early signing period in December 2023, amidst speculation that he was contemplating a switch to Maryland.
After two days marked by tension, Seaton ultimately put pen to paper, officially solidifying his future in Boulder.
The outcome proved to be worth the wait.
Seaton started all 13 games as a true freshman, allowing just one sack and earning Freshman All-American honors.
He is already projected to be a future first-round NFL draft pick, potentially continuing a legacy that Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders appear poised to set this coming April.
5. Julian Lewis, Carrollton; Colorado (2025)
For the first time in his coaching career, Coach Prime will entrust the offensive leadership to a quarterback without the “Sanders” surname on his jersey.
So, what was his strategy?
Carrollton (Georgia) five-star quarterback Julian Lewis, initially the top recruit in the class of 2026, made the decision to reclassify to 2025.
By August 2023, he had committed to the USC Trojans and maintained that commitment for over a year.
However, despite his long-standing commitment, Lewis regularly engaged with other programs and took visits.
Schools like Colorado, Georgia, Indiana, and others continued to pursue the talented signal-caller, attempting to sway him from Lincoln Riley.
Yet, no one rolled out the red carpet quite like the Buffs did.
During Lewis’ official visit, he was greeted by a warm welcome at the Boulder Theatre, where fans held signs and chanted his name; a local burger spot even named a burger in his honor, and he participated in a photo shoot where Shedeur Sanders symbolically passed him the keys.
Despite this, Lewis remained committed to USC… until November 2024.
Almost immediately, whispers emerged that Coach Prime had orchestrated another five-star coup.
However, Lewis, ranked as the nation’s No. 12 prospect, only made it official later in November when he announced his decision on “The Pat McAfee Show.”
He may well rise further in the rankings.
However, it will be a challenge to reach the very top.
Travis Hunter secured one of the most stunning moments in college football signing day history and subsequently captured a Heisman Trophy.
Shedeur Sanders played a crucial role in launching his father’s viral coaching career by leading the team for multiple seasons as a probable future first-round NFL draft pick.
The phrases “Hunter to Jackson State” and “Sanders coaching Sanders” have become iconic in modern college football lore.
Even Cormani McClain’s commitment left a mark, demonstrating to fans that Hunter’s decision was neither a fluke nor a one-time shock.
This indicated that Coach Prime was firmly entrenched in his role.
Jordan Seaton’s commitment highlighted Sanders’ ability to swiftly address weaknesses in his roster, showing he would not overly rely on his sons or his strong defensive background.
But could Lewis ascend to the No. 3 spot?
It seems quite possible.
Provided that Sanders doesn’t keep adding to his impressive list of five-star recruits in the future.
And it would be unwise to bet against him.
