This upcoming offseason, the Detroit Pistons could potentially have up to $60 million in salary cap space. Rumor has it that one of the players they are eyeing is forward Miles Bridges from Charlotte.
On Monday night, Detroit will witness Bridges in action as the Hornets visit their home court.
Having signed a qualifying offer last season, Bridges will become an unrestricted free agent soon. His path to a lucrative free agency deal was hindered a couple of seasons ago due to legal troubles linked to allegations of domestic violence.
Sidelined for the entire previous season and suspended for the first 10 games of this season for Charlotte, Bridges, an alumnus of Michigan State, has showcased commendable consistency upon his return.
With 21.3 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game in 53 appearances, including 51 starts, Bridges has been a standout performer.
Despite Bridges scoring 32 points and grabbing 12 rebounds, the Hornets suffered a 112-100 loss against the Washington Wizards, marking their sixth consecutive defeat. However, Charlotte managed to break the losing streak by defeating the Brooklyn Nets 110-99 the following day.
Contributing a team-leading 24 points along with 10 rebounds and four assists, Bridges played a pivotal role in Charlotte’s victory.
“The one thing about Miles is … (he played) 39 minutes (Saturday), second night of a back-to-back, I think he played 40 last night, and he plays every play. He takes no plays off,” Hornets coach Steve Clifford said. “He’s into it, he knows what we’re doing and he’s all-out. … You want guys that compete every night, and he does it.”
Aside from Bridges, Charlotte witnessed significant contributions from other players in the win against the Nets. Rookie Brandon Miller put up 23 points and secured seven rebounds, point guard Vasilije Micic registered 12 points and 10 assists, while center Nick Richards contributed 15 points and 11 rebounds.
“It’s a good opportunity for him,” Clifford said of Richards. “He’s getting to play big minutes. He’s playing against starters a good majority of the time. You’ve got to remember he really didn’t get minutes as a pro until last year, so he needs this.”
Charlotte sealed the win by limiting the Nets to just 17 points in the fourth quarter.
“We were in the same exact place (Friday) in the fourth quarter and kind of lost our way at both ends,” Clifford said. “(Saturday), we weren’t great offensively, but our defense was much better. For three quarters, our offense was really good. After the first quarter, our defense was very good. There are definitely things to like about the game and hopefully build on.”
Following their initial win over the Brooklyn Nets in a six-game homestand, the Pistons struggled against Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks, succumbing to a 142-124 defeat.
Setting an NBA record with his sixth consecutive 30-point triple-double, Doncic amassed 39 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists. Capitalizing on their 55.4 percent shooting efficiency, the Mavericks established dominance by outscoring the Pistons 35-23 in the third quarter.
“I think we had seven turnovers in the third quarter,” Detroit coach Monty Williams said. “Nobody played defense. They didn’t. We didn’t — the whole game. We just turned it over in the third quarter.”
Reported with six turnovers in the quarter and a total of 20 turnovers in the game, the Pistons missed an opportunity despite notable performances. Cade Cunningham excelled with 33 points, nine rebounds, and 10 assists, Simone Fontecchio achieved a career-best 27 points, and James Wiseman contributed 17 points and 12 rebounds.
“It felt good, but I wanted to get a win,” Fontecchio said of his big scoring night. “I wanted to get two wins in a row, especially now that we’re home. I think we have to take advantage of that.”

The Impact of Rudy Gobert's Absence Against the Nuggets in Game 2
Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert’s availability is questionable for the upcoming Game 2 happening on Monday night in Denver for personal reasons.
In the opener of the Western Conference semifinal series on Saturday, Gobert played a significant role by contributing six points, grabbing 13 rebounds, making three blocks, and assisting three times in the team’s 106-99 victory.
Being a three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and a three-time All-Star, Gobert maintained an average of 14.0 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks in 76 games during the regular season.
Standing tall at 7-foot-1, the 31-year-old Gobert has an overall average of 12.7 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks throughout his career in 757 games for the Utah Jazz (2013-22) and the Timberwolves.
If Gobert is unable to play against the reigning champions, Naz Reid, who won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year this season, may step into the starting lineup.
