Ontario Christian (Ontario, Calif.) has reclaimed the top spot in the Top 25 high school girls basketball rankings following their 61-44 victory against Archbishop Mitty (San Jose, Calif.) at the SI20 Showcase on Saturday.
This win avenged their earlier 59-34 defeat in the Nike Tournament of Champions final on December 21. However, the game was marred by a non-contact injury sustained by Mitty junior forward McKenna Woliczko.
Despite Woliczko’s absence, Mitty managed to tie the game at 40 late in the third quarter, but Ontario Christian, led by the outstanding point guard Kaleena Smith, surged in the final stretch, finishing the game with a commanding 21-4 run.
In a few weeks, Ontario Christian will face another formidable challenge as they go national with a matchup against Olivia Vukosa and Christ the King (Middle Village, N.Y.) at the Hoophall Classic on January 17.
Unfortunately for Mitty, Woliczko will miss the remainder of the season due to an ACL injury that requires surgery. The Monarchs will kick off their league schedule soon, facing No. 10 Sidwell Friends (Washington, D.C.) and No. 3 Morris Catholic (Denville, N.J.) on January 17 and 18, respectively, at Hoophall.
While losing Woliczko is a setback, the Monarchs have a capable roster with senior Emma Cook, junior Devin Cosgriff, sophomore point Tiera McCarthy, sophomore Ze’Ni Patterson, and freshman Maliya Hunter all ready to step up.
Two teams join the rankings this week, with St. John’s (Washington, D.C.) coming in at No. 24 and Providence Academy (Plymouth, Minn.) securing the No. 25 spot.
St. John’s boasts a perfect 13-0 record, spearheaded by juniors Camille Nesmith (16.6 points per game) and Morgan Stewart (15.4). The Cadets recently began WCAC play with a close 47-45 victory over Paul VI (Chantilly, Va.).
Providence Academy stands as the top team in Minnesota, led by junior Maddyn Greenway, who is averaging an impressive 29.9 points per game and nearing 3,500 career points. Given her scoring trajectory, there’s a strong likelihood she could reach 4,000 points by the season’s end, aiming for 5,000 before her high school career concludes.
In addition, Greenway’s sister, Beckett, is also making waves on the team, averaging 12.0 points per game as an eighth grader and scoring 22 points in each of the last two games.
