The inaugural regular season rankings for high school girls basketball have a fresh leader — Ontario Christian (Ontario, Calif.).
The Knights are currently enjoying a perfect 9-0 record, with impressive victories over No. 8 Duncanville (Texas), No. 9 Etiwanda (Calif.), and No. 15 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.), alongside wins against Monterey (Lubbock, Texas) and Aaliyah Chavez, the top-ranked player in the Class of 2025.
This success is powered by standout sophomore Kaleena Smith and two highly-touted freshmen, Sydney Douglas and Tatianna Griffin. Currently, Smith is averaging 21.8 points and 8.2 assists per game. Griffin contributes 17.7 points and 8.1 rebounds per game, while Douglas rounds out the trio with an average of 17.1 points and 9.1 rebounds per contest.
Each of these stars has delivered standout performances at critical moments; Douglas netted 20 points in a hard-fought 74-66 win against preseason No. 1 Etiwanda, Smith recorded a remarkable 29 points in triumphs over Duncanville and Monterey, and Griffin scored 20 as the Knights emerged victorious against Mater Dei on Sunday.
Looking ahead, Ontario Christian seems poised for an exciting matchup against No. 2 Archbishop Mitty (San Jose, Calif.) at the Nike TOC in Phoenix scheduled for December 18-21.
Archbishop Mitty, the reigning TOC champion, boasts a perfect 4-0 record after claiming the title at the La Jolla Country Day Sweet 16 tournament, where they defeated the hosts 65-40 in the championship game. McKenna Woliczko, honored as last year’s National Sophomore of the Year, led Mitty’s charge with a stellar 28 points and 12 rebounds in the final, earning MVP honors.
No. 3 Hebron Christian (Dacula, Ga.) has started strong with a 6-0 mark, but suffered an unfortunate setback when Georgia commit Aubrey Beckham was sidelined for the season due to an ACL injury sustained in a win against IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) just before Thanksgiving. Despite this challenge, head coach Jan Azar still fields a talented squad featuring Mia James, Danielle Osho, and Ja’kerra Butler as the Lions pursue another state championship.
No. 19 Incarnate Word Academy (St. Louis, Mo.) has an impressive streak, maintaining an undefeated run since February 2, 2020, bringing their 133-game winning streak into the 2024-25 season. The Red Knights sit at 2-0, just six wins shy of surpassing Central Plains (Claflin, Kan.) for the all-time record.
