The Los Angeles Lakers and the Sacramento Kings will face off on Wednesday, both aiming to enhance their playoff position after recent wins against some top Western Conference teams.

The Lakers secured a 116-104 win on Monday over the Oklahoma City Thunder, who were leading the Western Conference at the start of the week.

Meanwhile, the Kings clinched a thrilling 124-120 overtime victory against the Minnesota Timberwolves in Minneapolis last Friday.

Despite this success, Sacramento has faced defeats in three of their last four games, including a disappointing 113-109 loss against the Chicago Bulls at home on Monday, squandering a 22-point lead in the second half.

Although the Lakers missed a win opportunity against the Denver Nuggets last Saturday, they bounced back and defeated the Thunder courtesy of excellent shooting from their guards. D’Angelo Russell led with 26 points, supported by Austin Reaves with 16, collectively making nine successful 3-pointers.

Russell played a pivotal role in widening the lead over Oklahoma City with three back-to-back 3-pointers in just over a minute early in the fourth quarter, pushing the Lakers to a commanding 103-79 lead with 9:06 on the clock. The bench erupted in jubilation as the Thunder called for a timeout.

“Obviously we know that D-Lo can get going,” said Los Angeles star LeBron James, who scored 19 points to go along with 11 rebounds and eight assists on Monday. “He can make three or four threes in a row and break the game open, and he did that again once again.”

“The uncanny ability that once he sees the ball go through the hoop, he can run off three or four of them, get the crowd into it, get us hyped and we’re able to take the momentum from there.”

The Lakers are on a roll as a unit, boasting a 10-4 record since the start of February when the trade deadline was approaching. Speculation surrounded Russell being traded, however, the Lakers retained the seasoned player and are reaping the rewards of that decision.

“My teammates find me when I’m hot,” Russell said on a Spectrum SportsNet broadcast. “I think for me, it makes it easier when I can stretch the floor like that.”

Sacramento, on the other hand, faced a setback against the Nuggets last week but managed to regroup and defeat the Timberwolves on Friday after a players-only meeting. However, their return home on Monday saw them being outscored 36-18 by the Bulls in the final quarter.

With a 22-point lead at 3:28 left in the third quarter, the Kings saw their advantage slip away. De’Aaron Fox of Sacramento contributed 20 points and 10 assists in his comeback after missing two games due to a bruised left knee.

In addition, Domantas Sabonis recorded 18 points and 21 rebounds but fouled out with less than three minutes remaining, ending his streak of 43 consecutive double-doubles.

“Anytime you lose one of your top two players down the stretch of a ballgame, it’s tough, but the reality of it is him fouling out at that point didn’t cost us the game,” Kings coach Mike Brown said. “We had a few self-inflicted wounds throughout the course of the game, and not just in the fourth quarter, not just in the last three minutes.”

One worrisome aspect was the Kings’ 18 turnovers resulting in 24 points for the Bulls, whereas Sacramento managed only 12 points from Chicago’s 10 turnovers.

In the opener of the Western Conference semifinal series on Saturday, Gobert played a significant role by contributing six points, grabbing 13 rebounds, making three blocks, and assisting three times in the team’s 106-99 victory.

Being a three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and a three-time All-Star, Gobert maintained an average of 14.0 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks in 76 games during the regular season.

Standing tall at 7-foot-1, the 31-year-old Gobert has an overall average of 12.7 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks throughout his career in 757 games for the Utah Jazz (2013-22) and the Timberwolves.
