The Los Angeles Lakers, having displayed an impressive offensive showcase at the beginning of their revival last month, are now striving for similar outcomes as they prepare to face off against the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday.
In their recent game against the Atlanta Hawks, the Lakers secured a convincing 136-105 win at home, reminiscent of their stellar 6-1 streak at the start of February. During this successful run, they managed to score 124 points or more on four occasions.
D’Angelo Russell led the charge with 27 points, accompanied by LeBron James with 25 points and Anthony Davis contributing 22 points along with 15 rebounds despite doubts regarding an eye injury. The Lakers (37-32) have been fluctuating between the ninth and 10th positions in the Western Conference standings recently.
Russell showcased his prowess by going 6 of 10 from beyond the arc, matching the franchise record set by Nick Van Exel in 1994-95 with his season total of 183 made 3-pointers. His four crucial long-range shots in the second half played a significant role in the Lakers’ victory.
“It’s really cool, honestly, just to know that, to get credit for your game and what you work to do and showcase it every night,” said Russell, who added 10 assists, about tying the mark. “It’s just really cool. I said I don’t want to underdo it, understate it, overdo it. I just feel like it’s really cool to just be a part of something like that.”
The Lakers not only boasted an impressive 57.8 percent shooting accuracy from the field but also nailed 41.7 percent (15 of 36) of their 3-point attempts, while also capitalizing on 23 fast-break points, illustrating the strength of their offense.
“We’ll get a chance to tighten up some things offensively, tighten up some things defensively,” Lakers coach Darvin Ham said. “There’s a couple of new wrinkles we want to do on both sides of the ball, and we’ll get a chance to look at.”
Struggling to find their rhythm lately with a 3-6 record since consecutive wins on March 1 and 3, the 76ers (38-31) are facing challenges down the stretch. Joel Embiid, sidelined since Jan. 30 due to a left knee injury necessitating surgery, is making progress towards a comeback.
Having increased his on-court training, Embiid aims to make his return before the season concludes.
“He is on the court, I don’t want to say daily, but almost every day now where he is on the court doing basketball things,” Sixers coach Nick Nurse said. “All the checkups have been positive and he’s kind of in the ramp-up phase now. What can he handle? When can he start having contact? When can he start playing one-on-one? … Then we’ll be really close.”
Kelly Oubre Jr. scored 18 points in the Sixers’ recent 115-102 loss to the Phoenix Suns, halting their two-game winning streak. This defeat marked the beginning of a four-game road trip, with three more matches left in California.
In addition to Embiid’s absence, Tobias Harris missed his third consecutive game due to a right ankle injury, while De’Anthony Melton has been sidelined since the beginning of the month with a back issue. Melton had also missed a significant portion of January and February due to injury.

The Impact of Rudy Gobert's Absence Against the Nuggets in Game 2
Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert’s availability is questionable for the upcoming Game 2 happening on Monday night in Denver for personal reasons.
In the opener of the Western Conference semifinal series on Saturday, Gobert played a significant role by contributing six points, grabbing 13 rebounds, making three blocks, and assisting three times in the team’s 106-99 victory.
Being a three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and a three-time All-Star, Gobert maintained an average of 14.0 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks in 76 games during the regular season.
Standing tall at 7-foot-1, the 31-year-old Gobert has an overall average of 12.7 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks throughout his career in 757 games for the Utah Jazz (2013-22) and the Timberwolves.
If Gobert is unable to play against the reigning champions, Naz Reid, who won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year this season, may step into the starting lineup.
