Klay Thompson achieved two new team records with a 25-point performance, yet despite a 123-116 win against the Utah Jazz, the Golden State Warriors were unable to move up from the 10th spot in the Western Conference standings in the final game of the regular season on Sunday afternoon.

To avoid the last play-in place, the Warriors (46-36) needed assistance from either the New Orleans Pelicans or Portland Trail Blazers. However, the Los Angeles Lakers secured the No. 8 seed with a victory, while the Sacramento Kings claimed the No. 9 spot by defeating the Warriors and holding a tiebreaker advantage.

On Tuesday, the Warriors will take on the Kings in a do-or-die match to kick off the Western Conference play-in tournament.

Ahead of the playoffs, Golden State decided to rest Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, limiting Thompson to just 20 minutes of play. In that time, he managed to connect on 6 of 12 three-point attempts, delivering the highest point total of the game.

During the game, Thompson surpassed the season scoring record against Utah set by World B. Free in 1980-81, finishing with 118 points in four games. His six triples also elevated his season total against the Jazz to 22, surpassing the previous record he shared with Curry by five.

The Jazz concluded the season with a 31-51 record, missing out on the playoffs for the second consecutive year.

With the majority of Golden State’s regular players watching from the sidelines, the game’s outcome was determined in the final 4:10 minutes, during which Utah briefly led 114-113 after Luka Samanic converted a three-point play.

However, the Warriors closed out the game with a 10-2 run, with Gui Santos seizing the lead for Golden State with two successful free throws and Jerome Robinson contributing five of the last eight points, including a crucial three-point play.

In the closing lineup for Golden State, Santos scored 13 points, Lester Quinones added 12, Andrew Wiggins posted 19 starting points, and Dario Saric chipped in with 12.

After sitting out Friday’s loss to New Orleans due to a bruised tailbone, Jonathan Kuminga returned as the assist leader for the Warriors with seven assists in 23 minutes of play, despite not scoring. Brandin Podziemski led the team in rebounds, securing nine boards.

Utah was led by Keyonte George with 21 points, and Omer Yurtseven contributed 11 points and a game-high 18 rebounds to record a double-double.

Taylor Hendricks (16), Samanic (14), Brice Sensabaugh (14), Kira Lewis Jr. (13), and Micah Potter (10) also scored in double digits for the Jazz, who aimed to end the season on a positive note with a three-game winning streak.
