The Indiana Pacers enhanced their lineup on Wednesday, securing Toronto Raptors standout Pascal Siakam in a three-way deal involving the New Orleans Pelicans. In a mutually beneficial trade, the Pacers traded guard Bruce Brown, forward Jordan Nwora, and multiple 2024 second-round picks to Toronto.

Additionally, Indiana relinquished a projected top-four 2026 first-round pick to the Raptors. As part of the agreement, Indiana gained guard Kira Lewis Jr. and financial considerations from New Orleans.

Indiana managed to retain its youthful core players

The Pacers pulled off a daring yet astute move without having to part ways with any of their younger athletes. Bennedict Mathurin, along with defensive expert Andrew Nembhard, remains integral to the team, and the Pacers also preserved Jarace Walker, selected 8th overall in the 2023 NBA Draft.

As trade rumors around Siakam gained momentum in recent weeks, it was only a matter of time before he was on the move. With a current season record of 16-25, Toronto recently traded OG Anunoby to the New York Knicks in exchange for Immanuel Quickley and RJ Barrett. Since the 2021-2022 season, Toronto has not made a playoff run and is evidently in rebuilding mode, banking on 22-year-old Scottie Barnes as their centerpiece.

The trade is logical, especially considering that both Siakam and Anunoby were likely to enter free agency this summer. Apart from their 2019 championship title, the Raptors have displayed little beyond mediocrity since the 2020-2021 season. With the departures of Kawhi Leonard and Fred VanVleet, Toronto struggled to secure victories despite retaining a pool of talented players. With the recent changes, RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley will continue to evolve, and the Raptors organization can chart a course for the future. Their post-championship roster implosion seemed inevitable.

The Pacers’ front office shows faith in the team

The Pacers have not seen playoff action since the 2019-2020 season, prompting Pacers President of Basketball Operations Kevin Pritchard to advocate for a substantial trade in the past.

Given the young talent and draft assets at their disposal, the timing was perfect for Indiana. It is evident that the Pacers are well ahead of their rebuilding timetable, having registered a combined win-loss record of just 94-142 from 2020 to 2023.

From my perspective, the Pacers’ front office has unwavering confidence in this team, especially after their significant showing in this year’s In-Season Tournament.

The downside? The Pacers will bid farewell to the seasoned guard Bruce Brown, who brought championship experience from his tenure in Denver. Brown, who signed a $45 million, 2-year contract with the Pacers last offseason, made a substantial impact this year, starting all 33 games and posting career-high statistics in points (12.1), minutes (29.7), and free-throw percentage (81.7%).

In his eight seasons with Toronto, Siakam averaged 17.4 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 3.6 assists, with a 32.7% three-point shooting and 49.1% field goal shooting. He was named a 2-time NBA All-Star, All-NBA Second Team, and Most Improved Player, playing a pivotal role in the Raptors’ championship campaign across 510 career NBA games.

He contributes defensive flexibility to the Pacers

He now joins the Pacers, leading the NBA in total offense this year. Not only is this team potent offensively, but they also boast the highest offensive rating in NBA history. Spearheaded by guard Tyrese Haliburton, Indiana is currently vying for a playoff spot and is committed to constructing a winning lineup. Siakam’s inclusion is everything the Pacers desired, especially with Haliburton’s burgeoning stardom.

While Indiana excels in scoring, they lack defensive prowess and size alongside center Myles Turner. Scoring 125.6 points per game is commendable, but when it comes to contending, they need to shore up their defense. Ranking 27th in defensive rating (119.5), the Pacers permit the league’s worst 50.2% field goal percentage. Additionally, they struggle in perimeter defense and rebounding, ranking near the bottom in defensive rebounding (30.6 per game).

Standing at 6’8″, Siakam is a two-way wing who will immediately impact Indiana on both ends of the court. While Myles Turner was frequently part of trade speculation, he now forms an essential part of their frontcourt. With Turner’s ability to stretch the floor, Siakam brings versatility, size, and length on defense. He excels in defending multiple positions, which will aid their guards, and provides a scoring option in the starting lineup, replacing Jalen Smith.

Can the Pacers secure Siakam on a long-term contract?

While the Pacers made a rare move by offering multiple assets for Siakam, the big question remains whether they can secure the forward on a long-term deal. Given Haliburton’s exceptional talent, Siakam has never played alongside such a skilled playmaker and scorer. Despite the team’s youthful core, their bench remains remarkably deep, with Jalen Smith, Obi Toppin, Jarace Walker, and Aaron Nesmith remaining in rotation for Indiana. Perhaps their depth will be the key to their success.

With $38 million left on his expiring contract, the primary concern lies in the Pacers’ ability to retain Siakam long-term. Although he cannot sign a long-term deal until summer, rumors suggest that the Pacers are optimistic.

In an interview with Mark Medina of Sportskeeda, Siakam’s agent, Todd Ramasar, shared his thoughts on his client’s upcoming free agency and the recent trade.

“I could see Pascal in Indiana long term,” expressed Siakam’s agent, Todd Ramasar. “They want to see Pascal with the organization long term.” He also mentioned the forward’s “excitement and enthusiasm about the opportunity in Indiana.”

A high-risk, high-reward move, the Cameroonian native is in the prime of his career and will have an immediate impact on Indiana. In 39 games this season, Siakam is averaging 22.2 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 4.9 assists, shooting at a high clip from the field (52.2%), his best since the 2018-2019 season.
