Hobbled Celtics Aim to Neutralize High-Scoring Hawks

Boston not only suffered a defeat but also a blow when they fell 96-113 against the Orlando Magic on Friday. The team lost center Kristaps Porzingis for an unspecified duration of time.

The Celtics revealed that Porzingis will miss the upcoming home game against Atlanta due to a calf strain, an injury he sustained during Friday’s match and couldn’t resume playing.

After the game, Porzingis mentioned to The Boston Globe his plan to undergo an MRI but downplayed the seriousness of the injury. His return to the court is uncertain, although he expressed optimism on his Instagram account, saying, “Good news this morning. Be back very soon.”

Porzingis, obtained by the Celtics in a three-team trade in June, has appeared in 15 of the 16 games this season and has been averaging 18.9 points and 6.7 rebounds per game.

Jrue Holiday’s availability for the next game is in question due to a right ankle sprain suffered in a recent victory over the Milwaukee Bucks. Additionally, Derrick White played through an arm contusion sustained in Friday’s game.

“Obviously we’re a better team when everybody’s healthy, but there are going to be nights throughout the course of the season when guys are in and out of the lineup,” said Boston’s Jayson Tatum. “Can’t use that as an excuse. Still got to get the job done.”

Atlanta, on a five-game road trip, is dealing with its own injury concern. Forward Jalen Johnson left the recent game with a wrist injury and did not return. Despite this, the Hawks have been on a scoring spree, tallying 435 points in their last three games.

The Hawks received significant contributions from several players in the recent victory. Trae Young led the team with 26 points and 10 assists, while D’Andre Hunter and Bogdan Bogdanovic scored 20 and 15 points, respectively. Clint Capela notched a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Dejounte Murray added 11 points and 10 assists, and Saddiq Bey finished with 13 points and nine rebounds.

Discussing the recent performance, Bey highlighted the team’s confidence in its depth and collective effort, saying, “I think we’re the deepest team in the league across the board. Everybody who comes in contributes. Everybody works hard every day, so we’re confident in everyone.”

In the loss against Orlando, the Celtics struggled in the latter two quarters, with the opponent outscoring them 65-40. Boston’s shooting from beyond the arc was at 24.1 percent, and they were outrebounded 48-31.

“You’re definitely frustrated when you’re not making shots, but at the end of the day it goes back to two things: transition (defense) and the offensive rebounds,” remarked Boson coach Joe Mazzulla. “There were two stretches where they go on that 17-0 run in the middle of the third and then they went on a run in the middle of the second. Outside of those two bad stretches we played real good basketball, but it’s not enough against a team like this.”

Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert’s availability is questionable for the upcoming Game 2 happening on Monday night in Denver for personal reasons.

In the opener of the Western Conference semifinal series on Saturday, Gobert played a significant role by contributing six points, grabbing 13 rebounds, making three blocks, and assisting three times in the team’s 106-99 victory.

Being a three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and a three-time All-Star, Gobert maintained an average of 14.0 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks in 76 games during the regular season.

Standing tall at 7-foot-1, the 31-year-old Gobert has an overall average of 12.7 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks throughout his career in 757 games for the Utah Jazz (2013-22) and the Timberwolves.

If Gobert is unable to play against the reigning champions, Naz Reid, who won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year this season, may step into the starting lineup.
