Grizzlies, Celtics Gather in Attempt to Shake Competing Slumps

Boston Celtics vs Memphis Grizzlies

When they face off against the Boston Celtics on Sunday night, the Memphis Grizzlies will strive to put an end to a four-game losing streak.

The four-game downturn kicked off with a 116-110 loss on the road against the Indiana Pacers last Sunday. Following that, Memphis recorded home defeats against the Sacramento Kings, with a score of 103-94 on Monday, and the Cleveland Cavaliers, with a score of 108-101 on Thursday, and the Golden State Warriors, with a score of 121-101 on Friday.

Dealing with injuries to their key players throughout the season, the Grizzlies, who have been averaging 107.2 points per game, rank last among the 30 NBA teams in terms of their scoring. During the loss on Friday, Memphis managed to make 40.2 percent of their field goals and was 14 of 46 (30.4 percent) from beyond the arc.

Jaren Jackson Jr. led the Grizzlies with 27 points against the Warriors, with Jacob Gilyard and David Roddy also contributing 16 points each.

“Guys competed,” Memphis coach Taylor Jenkins said. “There’s kind of like a dual world we’re living in where when we’re moving the ball, 35 made shots, 30 assists, but then when we’re force feeding a little bit.”

“We’re not making that early pass just to create that energy. … Guys had their moments, but we have to clean that up for sure. The guys are fighting. Battling.”

Due to a sprained ankle, Memphis has been without Desmond Bane, who has been averaging 24.4 points per game this season. Ja Morant is out for the season following shoulder surgery.

The Celtics will be striving to avoid consecutive home losses, having suffered a 114-105 setback at home against the Los Angeles Lakers, who were without Anthony Davis and LeBron James.

“I’m not happy about it, but I’m not concerned by it,” Boston coach Joe Mazzulla said. “I think it’s unacceptable. Doesn’t mean I’m concerned. We’ll work through it.”

“I think part of a bad stretch of basketball is physical just as much as mental, and I think those two things go hand in hand. So I think it’s unacceptable for those things to happen, but if you take a look at the whole scope of our season, they happen very little.”

Although Boston commenced the season with a 20-0 record at home, they have lost three of their five home games since then.

“This quote always works for me: ‘You win or you learn,'” Boston center Kristaps Porzingis said. “You learn more from your losses 100 percent. … Of course we try to always look at each other, look at ourselves in the mirror like, ‘OK, even if we won, what are the things we need to clean up? What do we need to do better?’

“But it still doesn’t hit the same as when you actually get a loss. Then you’re really like, ‘OK, we need to get better at this, this, this, or this didn’t work, or we actually played all right, but we just didn’t make shots.’ We definitely learn more from the losses and I think this is healthy for us.”

Sunday’s game will mark the second time the teams have met this season. In a game held on Nov. 19 in Memphis, Porzingis scored 26 points to assist the Celtics in securing a 102-100 victory.

Despite committing 17 turnovers, the Celtics emerged triumphant.

Memphis was propelled with a game-high 30 points from Bane in the November encounter, and Santi Aldama concluded with 28 points and 12 rebounds.

Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert’s availability is questionable for the upcoming Game 2 happening on Monday night in Denver for personal reasons.

In the opener of the Western Conference semifinal series on Saturday, Gobert played a significant role by contributing six points, grabbing 13 rebounds, making three blocks, and assisting three times in the team’s 106-99 victory.

Being a three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and a three-time All-Star, Gobert maintained an average of 14.0 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks in 76 games during the regular season.

Standing tall at 7-foot-1, the 31-year-old Gobert has an overall average of 12.7 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks throughout his career in 757 games for the Utah Jazz (2013-22) and the Timberwolves.

If Gobert is unable to play against the reigning champions, Naz Reid, who won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year this season, may step into the starting lineup.
