Grieving Warriors Return to the Court to Face Hawks

Warriors to 'carry the spirit' of Dejan Milojević in return to the court

In San Francisco on Wednesday night, the Golden State Warriors will honor late assistant coach Dejan Milojevic before facing the Atlanta Hawks in an NBA matchup.

Milojevic suffered a heart attack during a team dinner with fellow Golden State coaches, players, and staff in Salt Lake City last Tuesday night, passing away at the hospital early the next morning. This led the NBA to postpone the Warriors’ next two games.

Clearly affected by the unexpected loss of the 46-year-old, Golden State took six days off, even making a scheduled Monday practice optional when some players informed coach Steve Kerr that they were not yet ready to return.

The team ultimately held a full workout on Tuesday, marking the end of a week of mostly inactivity since a 116-107 loss at Memphis on Jan. 15.

“We needed (time to mourn). I want to thank the NBA, Adam Silver, for postponing those two games,” Kerr said Monday. “There’s no way any of us could have walked out onto a court and played a basketball game either (last) Wednesday or Friday.”

The Hawks-Warriors game will be preceded by a video tribute to Milojevic, who was in his third season with Golden State after starting his NBA coaching career with the Hawks’ summer-league team in 2016.

The long-time head coach in Europe also served on the coaching staffs of the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets’ summer leagues before joining Kerr.

Warriors center Kevon Looney, who collaborated closely with Milojevic, admitted that he is ready to return to the routine of the busy NBA schedule.

“Basketball is the fun part of our lives, getting on the court and competing. That’s what we’re all here as a family to do,” he said. “I’m looking forward to just being able to get to the game and be able to play. … I just want to get back on the court and try to get lost in my love for the game.”

The Hawks have played four games since the Warriors’ loss in Memphis, defeating the Orlando Magic and Miami Heat before suffering losses to the Cleveland Cavaliers and Kings.

Their 122-107 defeat against the Kings in Sacramento on Monday marked the beginning of a two-game California trip. The game against Orlando took place on the same day as the news of Milojevic’s passing.

Hawks guard and fellow Serbian Bogdan Bogdanovic, acknowledging that he never played under Milojevic but competed against him when he was a player in Europe, considered skipping the Orlando game.

“I was thinking about not showing up (last Wednesday) when I couldn’t sleep and I was out of my routine,” he said. “But then I was like, ‘He would not want me to do that.'”

Hawks star Trae Young is anticipated to miss his second consecutive game after sustaining a concussion on Saturday against the Cavaliers.

His backcourt partner Dejounte Murray, who has been the subject of much trade speculation in recent days, managed to compensate with a game-high 35 points on Monday against the Kings.

Warriors fans are likely to witness Draymond Green playing at home for the first time since his suspension on Dec. 14 for striking Phoenix’s Jusuf Nurkic in the face during a game against the Suns two days earlier.

Following his team’s 7-5 record during his suspension and a subsequent 1-3 record while he was regaining fitness, Green contributed seven points, seven rebounds, and four assists in 24 minutes off the bench in the defeat at Memphis.

Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert’s availability is questionable for the upcoming Game 2 happening on Monday night in Denver for personal reasons.

In the opener of the Western Conference semifinal series on Saturday, Gobert played a significant role by contributing six points, grabbing 13 rebounds, making three blocks, and assisting three times in the team’s 106-99 victory.

Being a three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and a three-time All-Star, Gobert maintained an average of 14.0 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks in 76 games during the regular season.

Standing tall at 7-foot-1, the 31-year-old Gobert has an overall average of 12.7 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks throughout his career in 757 games for the Utah Jazz (2013-22) and the Timberwolves.

If Gobert is unable to play against the reigning champions, Naz Reid, who won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year this season, may step into the starting lineup.
