Domantas Sabonis, Nikola Jokic Compete as Kings Host Nuggets

Sacramento Kings vs Denver Nuggets

When the Sacramento Kings host the Denver Nuggets on Friday night, the battle for leadership in the NBA’s triple-double race will be contested by Domantas Sabonis and Nikola Jokic.

Jokic secured a triple-double with 36 points, 13 rebounds and 14 assists during the Nuggets’ 123-117 loss at Sacramento on Dec. 2 in their sole previous encounter this season. Meanwhile, Sabonis responded with 17 points, 15 rebounds and seven assists in the victory.

The Kings clinched the win primarily due to their 48-18 scoring advantage from beyond the 3-point line and a 45-22 dominance in bench points. Malik Monk singlehandedly outscored the entire Denver reserve team with 26 points.

In their previous meeting, the Nuggets played without Jamal Murray. However, in their recent game against the Los Angeles Lakers, Murray contributed 29 points, Michael Porter Jr. scored 27, and Jokic added 24 to secure a 114-106 victory.

Jokic missed a triple-double by one assist in that game, leaving him tied with Sabonis for the NBA lead with 15 triple-doubles this season. Jokic’s latest double-double was his 43rd, three fewer than Sabonis’ league-high total.

Both players have achieved two triple-doubles in their career matchups. In the Kings’ recent defeat against the Detroit Pistons, Sabonis narrowly missed a triple-double by three assists, continuing his streak of 33 consecutive double-doubles with 30 points and 12 rebounds.

However, Sacramento’s starters failed to provide significant support for Sabonis, with Kevin Huerter, De’Aaron Fox, Harrison Barnes, and Keegan Murray combining for just 36 points.

Despite completing a 5-2 trip, the Kings now face a tough battle for fifth place in the Western Conference and must secure a win against the Nuggets to split the pair of home games.

Sacramento’s coach Mike Brown expressed disappointment with his team’s performance against the Pistons and emphasized the importance of playing with greater intensity.

“You’re going to lose games and you’re going to lose games that everybody thinks you should win,” he said Wednesday. “But if you lose a basketball game, you at least want to be able to look yourself in the mirror and say, ‘I left it out on the floor,’ and I don’t think many of us can look ourselves in the mirror tonight and say we left it out on the floor. That’s what’s disappointing to me.”

On the other hand, the Nuggets are aiming to balance their efforts after a demanding 48-minute battle against the Los Angeles Lakers. Murray commended the club’s four-man reserve team for their contribution of 21 points and 17 rebounds, acknowledging that despite rookie mistakes, their effort and intensity were commendable.

“We’re trying to get the young guys up to speed each and every game,” he said. “They’re going to make rookie mistakes. But as long as they are trying to make plays and play with some level of intensity, we can live with what they got.”

Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert’s availability is questionable for the upcoming Game 2 happening on Monday night in Denver for personal reasons.

In the opener of the Western Conference semifinal series on Saturday, Gobert played a significant role by contributing six points, grabbing 13 rebounds, making three blocks, and assisting three times in the team’s 106-99 victory.

Being a three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and a three-time All-Star, Gobert maintained an average of 14.0 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks in 76 games during the regular season.

Standing tall at 7-foot-1, the 31-year-old Gobert has an overall average of 12.7 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks throughout his career in 757 games for the Utah Jazz (2013-22) and the Timberwolves.

If Gobert is unable to play against the reigning champions, Naz Reid, who won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year this season, may step into the starting lineup.
