Securing a state wrestling championship is no small feat. But achieving it consecutively? Even more challenging. And now, imagine doing it three times, each in a different weight category.
Despite changes to his physique, Daniel Zepeda maintained his determination and skill as the Gilroy senior added a third consecutive state title to his name on Saturday at Mechanic’s Bank Arena in Bakersfield.
The match proved to be more challenging than anticipated, but Zepeda narrowly defeated Alias Raby, a junior from Anderson, with a score of 5-3 to secure the 150-pound championship. He had previously clinched titles at 132 pounds in 2023 and 138 pounds last season.
Zepeda was not alone in his success; he was joined by teammates Isaiah Cortez and Elijah Cortez, who also became repeat champions. Isaiah won the 126 title after previously taking the 120 title in 2023, while Elijah secured the 138 championship after winning at 126 last year.
Although the three individual titles were impressive, Gilroy lacked the depth required to capture the overall team championship, finishing with 239 points, just behind Buchanan (247.5 points) and defending champion Poway (240 points). Buchanan had dominated the competition, winning the last seven titles prior to 2024.
Buchanan junior Rocklin Zinkin defended his championship title with a hard-fought 7-2 victory over Poway’s Edwin Sierra in the finals. Zinkin had previously won the 113 title as a sophomore.
Other repeat male champions included Henry Aslikyan of Birmingham, who secured the 113 crown after winning at 106 the previous year, and senior Nikade Zinkin from Clovis, who claimed the 144 title following his 126 win in 2024.
On the girls’ side, two three-time champions emerged: Isabella Marie Gonzales from Clovis East, who won the 120 championship, and Lelani Lemus, a junior from Clovis, who claimed the 170-pound title.
Gonzales’ victory propelled Clovis East to the state team championship with a total of 84.5 points, followed by Northview (77), Buchanan (68), and Orange Vista (67.5).

This three-day extravaganza — the 52nd boys tournament alongside the 14th girls tournament — is projected to draw in near full capacity, nearly 9,000 fans each day. Approximately 1,000 wrestlers have qualified from along the extensive 760-mile stretch of the Golden State.
Among the 14 former state champions, surprises were few and far between. Here’s a recap of how these seasoned wrestlers fared on Friday.
