With the sun beginning to shine more regularly and the rain finally dissipating, California is ready for baseball season to dominate the athletic calendar at schools everywhere.
In the Central Coast Section, baseball action is in full swing, as top teams begin to distinguish themselves while others are proving to be formidable competitors. Ultimately, the goal remains clear: to lift the NorCal trophy in early June.
Let’s take a look at the top 15 baseball rankings in the Central Coast Section for this week and see where teams stand after yet another thrilling week.
CIF Central Coast Section High School Baseball Top 15 Rankings: Mar. 20
1. Junipero Serra (9-0)
Have been showcasing impressive performances over the last week, adding two more wins to their record with triumphs against Burlingame (10-1) and a recent 4-1 victory at Bellarmine. Other noteworthy wins include San Ramon Valley (6-3), St. Mary’s-Stockton (6-2), Los Gatos (6-1), and Capuchino (5-0). Senior Ian Josephson is leading the charge with an impressive .552 batting average. Upcoming games: vs. Bellarmine on Friday and vs. Saint Francis on March 25.
2. Saint Francis (7-2)
Spent last week going 2-1, earning a tight victory over Capuchino (2-1) after 10 innings, winning against Valley Christian (4-0), but falling short against Sequoia (3-2). They also experienced an earlier loss to Los Altos (3-2) in their second game. Notable victories include wins over Leigh (5-4), Palo Alto (4-3), Mountain View (3-2), Menlo-Atherton (3-1), and again Capuchino (2-1). Pitching has been a key component for the Lancers, as both Nick Chow and Landon Kim boast ERAs below 1.00 at this point. Upcoming games: Friday at Valley Christian and March 25 at Serra.
3. Valley Christian (6-2)
Are currently on a two-game losing streak, having lost both of last week’s matches. During this stretch, they fell 1-0 at home to Cardinal Newman and then suffered a 4-0 defeat on the road against Saint Francis. Senior Quinten Marsh is leading the Warriors’ batting lineup with a .417 average, while Brock Ketelsen tops the pitching stats with a flawless 0.00 ERA. Upcoming games: Friday vs. Saint Francis and March 25 vs. Bellarmine.
4. Archbishop Mitty (6-2)
On a three-game winning streak, they secured victories against Santa Cruz (6-1), Menlo-Atherton (5-4), and most recently, Riordan (9-6). Other notable wins include convincing performances against Christopher (11-0), Palo Alto (9-2), and Homestead (3-2). Their only losses have been to San Ramon Valley (11-3) and Valley Christian (3-0). Senior Grayson Munoz has started the season strong, batting .429, providing the Monarchs with considerable momentum. Upcoming games: Friday at Riordan and March 25 vs. Sacred Heart Cathedral.
5. Leigh (6-1)
Have rattled off six consecutive victories since their opening game loss to Saint Francis (5-4), defeating Hillsdale (6-5), Evergreen Valley (9-1), Milpitas (15-2), Riordan (7-1), Los Gatos (8-4), and most recently, Homestead (10-0). Upcoming games: Saturday vs. Piedmont Hills and March 26 vs. Westmont. Impressively, three Longhorn pitchers—seniors Dylan Christian, Tyler Wagner, and Noah Miller—maintain 0.00 ERAs.
6. Soquel (8-0)
Continued their hot start to the season by winning both games last week against Westmont (6-3) and Everett Alvarez (24-2). Other significant wins this year include Rancho San Juan (10-0), Carmel (11-4), Woodside (9-3), Pacific Grove (5-1), St. Francis-Watsonville (6-1), and Willow Glen (5-4). Hudson Summerhill is leading the team with a .500 batting average and has accumulated 13 RBIs. Upcoming games: Friday at San Lorenzo Valley and Saturday at Leland.
7. Los Gatos (7-2)
Are currently on a two-game winning streak after victories over St. Ignatius (1-0) and Leland (6-0). Earlier this season, they also defeated Aptos (2-0), King’s Academy (5-1), Menlo School (8-2), and Menlo-Atherton (15-2). Their only setbacks have been against Serra (6-1) and Leigh (8-4). Senior Julian McMahon is batting .556 to start the season, contributing three hits last week. Upcoming games: Saturday vs. Hollister and March 26 at Los Altos.
8. Sacred Heart Cathedral (5-2)
Dropped a game against Casa Grande (4-1) in their sole outing last week, ending their four-game winning streak. During that streak, they secured wins over Redwood (6-1), Tamalpais (6-3), El Camino (4-0), and Burlingame (4-2). They also defeated Mills (5-1) at the season’s start while their other loss was a close 2-1 contest against Carlmont. Jeremy Marquez has been outstanding, leading the team with a .400 batting average. Upcoming games: Thursday at Vacaville and Saturday vs. St. Ignatius.
9. The King’s Academy (5-2)
Boast a current three-game winning streak, with victories against Los Altos (7-2), Menlo School (4-1), and most recently, Capuchino (4-1). Earlier in the season, they secured wins over Prospect (3-2) and Wilcox (7-6), though faced two consecutive losses against Santa Clara (8-6) and Los Gatos (5-1). Senior Toby Trotter is leading the team in all major batting categories, hitting .625 and driving in six RBIs in 16 at-bats. Upcoming games: Thursday vs. Capuchino and April 9 at Sequoia.
10. Los Altos (5-1)
Defeated Carlmont (8-3) in their latest match, breaking a previous loss to King’s Academy (7-2), which was their first defeat of the season. Other victories this year include wins against Saint Francis (3-2), Branham (9-1), Leland (10-1), and another win against Leland (3-1). Pitcher Aaron Baum has excelled early on, leading the team with an impressive 0.64 ERA in two starts. Upcoming games: Friday vs. Pioneer and March 26 vs. Los Gatos.
11. Bellarmine (5-3)
Recently lost to Serra (4-1), ending their three-game winning streak. During that stretch, they achieved victories over Oak Ridge (10-2), San Lorenzo Valley (8-4), and Pioneer (1-0). Wins also include a victory over Bear Creek (4-0) and Buchanan (6-3), with setbacks against Amador Valley (10-5) and Jesuit (6-5). Senior UTIL Evan Taverez leads the team with eight RBIs this season, significantly contributing to the Bells’ early-season success. Upcoming games: Friday at Serra and Saturday vs. Homestead.
12. Carmel (5-1)
Have secured five consecutive wins after experiencing a season-opening loss to Soquel (11-4), defeating Scotts Valley (10-4), Aptos (9-5), Pacific Grove (7-0), Rancho San Juan (14-0), and most recently, Monterey (2-1). Upcoming games: Thursday vs. Monterey and Saturday at Menlo-Atherton.
13. Hollister (5-2)
Hold a three-game winning streak, having bested Palma twice (1-0 and 8-5), and in their latest match, defeated Salinas (2-0). Additional victories include wins over Christopher (5-2) and Carlmont (5-4). Their two losses were to Valley Christian (12-2) and Christopher (3-2). Upcoming games: Thursday vs. Salinas and Saturday at Los Gatos.
14. Lincoln-San Jose (7-3)
Suffered an 8-1 defeat against Piedmont Hills in their most recent matchup, ending a two-game winning streak. During that stretch, they secured wins over Del Mar twice (17-1 and 7-1). They started the season strong with a four-game winning streak, defeating Mt. Pleasant (13-0), Gunderson (14-1), Yerba Buena (10-0), and Saratoga (6-3). Their other losses have come against Mountain View (2-1) and Pioneer (12-0). Junior Ryan Gonzalez currently leads all hitters with an impressive .667 average and four RBIs through nine games this season. Upcoming games: Thursday at Piedmont Hills and March 25 at Evergreen Valley.
15. St. Ignatius (3-2-2)
Finished last week with a split, losing to Los Gatos (1-0) but coming back strong to beat Menlo-Atherton (6-2) in their latest outing. They also experienced wins over Palo Alto (11-0) and Granada (2-0) while enduring a narrow 6-5 defeat to Cardinal Newman. Tied up with Redwood and Acalanes earlier this season as well. Archer Horn has continued to lead the squad during this campaign, boasting a .524 batting average, three home runs, eight RBIs, and 11 hits. Upcoming games: Saturday at Sacred Heart Cathedral and March 25 vs. Riordan.
