Celtics Stage Comeback, Overturning a 21-Point Disadvantage to Hand Pistons Record 28th Consecutive Loss

On Thursday night, the Boston Celtics triumphed over a 21-point deficit and improved their home record to 15-0 by defeating the Detroit Pistons 128-122 in overtime. It was only the Jets fans who harbored thoughts of Aaron Rodgers making a comeback.

The Pistons set a dubious NBA record, experiencing their 28th consecutive defeat, marking the longest losing streak in-season in the league’s history. Should they suffer another loss on Saturday against the visiting Toronto Raptors, they would equal the all-time longest losing streak, inclusive of transitions between seasons.

After Jaden Ivey of Detroit executed a 3-pointer with 2:32 remaining in the overtime, placing Boston at a 115-113 deficit, the Celtics swiftly responded by scoring the subsequent six points. They did not concede the lead from that moment onward.

Kristaps Porzingis of Boston achieved a season-high 35 points and secured eight rebounds. Meanwhile, Jayson Tatum concluded the game with 31 points, seven rebounds, and 10 assists.

Cade Cunningham led the Pistons with 31 points and nine assists. Jalen Duren contributed 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Bojan Bogdanovic chipped in with 15 points, 14 rebounds, and 17 points, 12 rebounds, and six assists.

Despite trailing 64-43 late in the first half, the Celtics managed to take the lead at 108-106 after Cunningham was penalized for goaltending on a Tatum layup with 8.7 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Nevertheless, Bogdanovic sent the game into overtime by seizing the rebound of a missed 3-pointer and scoring with 4.1 seconds to go.

The Celtics emerged victorious despite the absence of Jaylen Brown, who was sidelined due to a back contusion sustained from a collision with LeBron James during Boston’s clash against the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday.

Isaiah Stewart of Detroit did not participate due to a toe injury, with Kevin Knox II filling in Stewart’s place in the starting lineup.

Although the Pistons enjoyed a 28-17 advantage with 2:33 remaining in the opening quarter, the Celtics capped off the quarter with a 10-2 surge, narrowing the gap to 30-27 heading into the second period.

Boston confronted its largest deficit of the season when Ivey extended the Pistons’ lead to 60-43 with 2:15 left in the second quarter. The deficit expanded to 21 as Duren sank two free throws with 45.1 seconds to spare, with the Pistons heading into halftime with a 66-47 lead.

The Celtics, who were 4 of 24 from 3-point range in the initial two quarters, outscored the Pistons 35-16 in the third quarter. The teams entered the final quarter deadlocked at 82-82.

Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert’s availability is questionable for the upcoming Game 2 happening on Monday night in Denver for personal reasons.

In the opener of the Western Conference semifinal series on Saturday, Gobert played a significant role by contributing six points, grabbing 13 rebounds, making three blocks, and assisting three times in the team’s 106-99 victory.

Being a three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and a three-time All-Star, Gobert maintained an average of 14.0 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks in 76 games during the regular season.

Standing tall at 7-foot-1, the 31-year-old Gobert has an overall average of 12.7 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks throughout his career in 757 games for the Utah Jazz (2013-22) and the Timberwolves.

If Gobert is unable to play against the reigning champions, Naz Reid, who won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year this season, may step into the starting lineup.
