Blazers Up For a Rematch with Nikola Jokic, Nuggets

Despite their youth and shortage of players, the Portland Trail Blazers put up a strong fight on the road in a losing effort against the Denver Nuggets on Friday night.
Now, they are aiming for more than just a moral victory as the teams face off again in Denver on Sunday night. The Nuggets emerged victorious with a score of 120-108, mainly due to a stellar performance by Nikola Jokic.
The two-time MVP scored 27 points and achieved a season-high of 22 rebounds and 12 assists. This extraordinary performance was crucial in fending off a resilient Portland team, which managed to recover from missing 13 of its first 16 shots.
“They jumped on us but, man, we showed some resolve,” Blazers coach Chauncey Billups said. “I was happy we got back in the game. I was happy with our effort. We played really well, and we pushed them to play a good game to beat us.”
Rookie Scoot Henderson and Anfernee Simons played a significant role in Portland’s performance, contributing to over half of the team’s points. Henderson scored 30 points and Simons scored 29, both taking charge at different stages of the game.
Despite the typical ups and downs of a rookie, Henderson has swiftly adapted to the NBA game, playing 37 minutes, his second-highest of the season.
“Scoot’s been playing great,” Billups said. “You’ve got to earn it, and he’s doing just that. He’s putting back-to-back games together.”
Denver bounced back from a loss at Oklahoma City on Wednesday night, with Jokic returning from low back pain. The night off seemed to benefit him, as he made 11 of his 16 field goal attempts and grabbed seven offensive rebounds.
Additionally, Jamal Murray came close to achieving a triple-double, and second-year forward Peyton Watson made a significant impact, scoring 10 of his 14 points in the fourth quarter.
“He was the X-factor for us, for sure,” Jokic said of Watson.
While Jokic and Murray understandably receive much acclaim, the Nuggets also received substantial contributions from the rest of the starting five. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Aaron Gordon showcase exceptional defensive skills, and Michael Porter Jr. is a potent scorer.
Although Caldwell-Pope experienced a scare in the final minutes of Friday’s win due to dislocating the pinkie finger on his shooting hand, he is expected to play in the rematch on Sunday night. However, Portland needs to contain Jokic in order to have a chance of securing a win.
“Really tough to beat them when he’s having that type of night,” Billups said.
“You have to have it really going offensively, a lot of shots going in, to be able to beat them on a night like that, when he’s putting a masterpiece performance on.”

Wolves C Rudy Gobert (Personal) Uncertain for Game 2
The Impact of Rudy Gobert's Absence Against the Nuggets in Game 2
Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert’s availability is questionable for the upcoming Game 2 happening on Monday night in Denver for personal reasons.
In the opener of the Western Conference semifinal series on Saturday, Gobert played a significant role by contributing six points, grabbing 13 rebounds, making three blocks, and assisting three times in the team’s 106-99 victory.
Being a three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and a three-time All-Star, Gobert maintained an average of 14.0 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks in 76 games during the regular season.
Standing tall at 7-foot-1, the 31-year-old Gobert has an overall average of 12.7 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks throughout his career in 757 games for the Utah Jazz (2013-22) and the Timberwolves.
If Gobert is unable to play against the reigning champions, Naz Reid, who won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year this season, may step into the starting lineup.
