Lawrence Central has been dropped from this week’s Top 25 high school girls basketball rankings following a 47-42 defeat to Lawrence North (Indianapolis) in a sectional final, signaling an early end to their title defense.
Hamilton Southeastern faced a challenging first half, trailing by nine points against Westfield, who had surprised Noblesville the previous night. The Royals bounced back with an impressive 18-6 run in the third quarter to take the lead, ultimately clinching the sectional title with a 46-38 victory.
As Hamilton Southeastern pursues the championship, they must navigate several potential challenges, including a looming confrontation with 24-1 South Bend Washington (South Bend).
In California, the release of the Southern Section Open Division round-robin bracket on Saturday showcased four teams in the Top 25 — No. 1 Ontario Christian (Ontario), No. 4 Mater Dei (Santa Ana), No. 7 Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth), and No. 10 Etiwanda.
Top-ranked Ontario Christian is placed in Pool A alongside Sierra Canyon, Bishop Montgomery (Torrance), and Sage Hill (Newport Beach). Pool B includes Mater Dei, Etiwanda, Windward (Los Angeles), and Fairmont Prep (Anaheim).
Pool play kicks off on Feb. 15, but all attention will pivot to Feb. 22 when Ontario Christian faces Sierra Canyon and Etiwanda contends with Mater Dei in their final pool play matchups. Pool winners will move on to compete for the Southern Section Open Division title on March 1.
Etiwanda is the reigning champion of the Open Division state for two consecutive years.
In Texas, No. 19 Boswell (Fort Worth) and No. 20 Judson (Converse) make their entrance into the rankings this week after both secured wins in the Class 6A Division II bracket on Monday.
Boswell triumphed over Southlake Carroll (Southlake) with a score of 57-26, led by Camille Williams with 17 points, while Seleste Massey and Salena Carrasco contributed 14 points each. Judson dominated Medina Valley (Castroville) 70-35, with Kayla King shining by scoring 27 points.
The two teams are now part of a highly competitive bracket that also features Guyer (Denton), Lancaster, Braswell (Little Elm), Cypress Springs (Cypress), and Fort Bend Hightower (Missouri City).
