The Hoophall West Classic, presented by The Nike Tournament of Champions, kicked off its opening round on Thursday.
The initial round showcased six Top 25 ranked teams nationally and more than 50 Division-1 prospects from the Classes of 2025, 2026, and 2027.
In the opening match of the Hoophall West Invitational, the defending CIF Open-Division Champion Roosevelt Mustangs (16-1) surged in the second half to defeat the Coronado Cougars (4-8) 77-59. Senior guard Brayden Burries, standing at 6-5, led the Mustangs with 19 points and eight rebounds. Myles Walker, a 5-10 senior guard, contributed 18 points on an efficient 8-of-11 shooting from the floor and hit 2-of-5 from three-point range, along with seven assists and seven steals.
For the Cougars, UNLV signee Mason Abittan posted a team-high 16 points with 7-of-14 shooting and seven rebounds. Junior guard Jonny Collins added 14 points in the loss.
In the tournament’s second matchup, Layton Christian Academy, the reigning UHSAA Class 4A Champion, narrowly defeated Notre Dame 54-53 with a last-second basket from 6-5 senior center Albert Ntungicimpaye.
The Eagles were led in scoring by 6-8 senior forward Tyrin Jones (UNLV signee) with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Eastern Washington commit Alan Gballou also recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
On the Knights’ side, 6-7 junior forward Tyran Stokes starred with 20 points on 7-of-19 shooting along with eight rebounds. Junior small forward also made a notable contribution with 15 points and seven rebounds.
The Braves continued the excitement in the third game of the Hoophall West Invitational, leading from start to finish in their dominant 58-42 victory over Sandra O’Connor. The standout performer for the Braves was 6-8 junior forward Christian Collins, who logged a game-high 22 points and 14 rebounds.
Gavin Dean-Moss, a 6-1 junior guard, supported his team with 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting. The Braves’ defense was stifling, preventing the Eagles from scoring a field goal for the first 7:50 of the game (1-of-14 shooting) during the first quarter, and they maintained strong control, limiting the Eagles to just 23 percent shooting in the second half.
The Eagles’ top performer was 6-7 junior forward Colton Watson, who managed to score 12 points on only 3-of-11 shooting, alongside 6-8 senior forward Michael Simcoe who contributed 11 points and six rebounds.
In the first of two EYBL Scholastic series matches, the Bella Vista College Prep Bears caused an upset against Link Academy, winning 64-56. Junior point guard Miles Sadler earned the title of Player of the Game with a team-high 15 points from 6-of-12 shooting.
Rokiem Green, a 6-2 junior guard, chipped in 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
For Link Academy, 7-0 senior center Chris Cenac (Houston commit) led the charge with 15 points and nine rebounds from 3-of-10 shooting. Additionally, 6-9 senior forward Amare Bynum (Ohio State commit) recorded 11 points, six rebounds, and three assists.
The final EYBL Scholastic game of the evening witnessed AZ Compass Prep returning to victory with a 60-52 scoreline in their favor.
The Dragons were powered by 6-3 junior combo guard Kalek House, the son of NBA veteran Eddie House, who delivered a game-high 22 points and four rebounds. Gonzaga commit Davis Fogle added 11 points on 4-of-11 shooting.
The leading scorer for the Tigers was 6-6 senior guard Isiah Harwell (Houston signee) with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while 6-6 junior combo guard Houston County contributed 16 points and eight rebounds despite the team’s loss.
In the opening contest of the traditional bracket, the Chaminade Red Devils secured a definitive win over Christ the King with a score of 58-40, earning a spot in the semifinals on Friday night where they will face De La Salle (California) at 7:30 p.m. Mountain Time.
The Red Devils were spearheaded by 6-9 junior forward Jamison White with a game-high 16 points and 16 rebounds, while fellow 6-8 junior forward Jahadi White Jr. came close to a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.
For the Royals, 6-1 senior guard Cameron Zeigler recorded 8 points and four rebounds, alongside 6-4 senior guard Jayden Ramirez adding 8 points in the defeat.
Christ the King will take on Duncanville (Texas) in the Consolation Bracket on Friday at 9:00 a.m. Mountain Time.
In an exciting match-up between two nationally ranked Top 50 teams, the De La Salle Spartans (13-0) clinched a 65-62 victory over Duncanville (Texas). This win propels the Spartans into Friday’s semifinal, where they will face Chaminade (Missouri) at 7:30 p.m. Mountain Time.
Alec Blair, a 6-6 senior guard who has committed to Oklahoma, led the Spartans with 21 points and seven rebounds during the match.
Duncanville (8-5), despite trailing by as much as 11 points, mounted a fierce comeback in the final quarter. They nearly leveled the score with a last-second three-point attempt from TCU signee Kayden Edwards, which unfortunately rimmed out.
Kayden Edwards topped Duncanville’s scoring with 17 points and three rebounds, while Christopher “Duece” Hunt Jr. contributed 15 points, shooting 5-of-7 from the field in the defeat.
Duncanville (Texas) will face Christ the King (New York) in the Consolation Bracket on Friday at 9:00 a.m. Mountain Time.
In the penultimate game of the evening during Day 1 of the Hoophall West Invitational, the Gonzaga Eagles (11-1) maintained a lead throughout the match, securing a spot in Friday night’s semifinal against either Harvard-Westlake (California) or Perry (Arizona) at 9:00 p.m. Mountain Time.
The Eagles’ offense was spearheaded by William Harper, a 6-4 senior shooting guard committed to Richmond, who scored 15 points along with four rebounds. Nyk Lewis, who has signed with Xavier, supported with 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting and four rebounds.
Sunnyslope (7-6) is set to play the loser of the Harvard-Westlake (California)-Perry (Arizona) match in the Consolation Bracket on Friday at 10:30 a.m. Mountain Time.
In their recent game, the Vikings saw 6-5 senior guard Rider Portela lead with 11 points and three rebounds, while both 6-8 junior power forward Kade Snyder and 5-10 senior point guard Delton Prescott also contributed 11 points each in the loss.
The final game of the evening showcased an electrifying encounter between two top-ranking teams from their respective states, resulting in Harvard-Westlake edging out Perry 57-54 in a nail-biting finish.
Harvard-Westlake (16-1) saw their efforts crowned by a stellar performance from 6-9 senior wing Nikolas Khamenia, who recorded a game-high 18 points and nine rebounds.
Perry (11-1), on the other hand, was led by 6-6 senior forward Dandre Harrison, who notched a team-high 17 points on 7-of-17 shooting. Additionally, 6-8 senior wing Koa Peat contributed 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Pumas.
