Jake Balanovich’s Journey to Defeating Tom Brady in the Mr. Beast QB Challenge

MrBeast Tom Brady Throwing Contest Winner Reveals Plan For 100k Winnings

As millions of children around the globe unwrap presents this holiday season, just a few weeks prior, Jake Balanovich, a senior quarterback at Cypress Bay, experienced an extraordinary opportunity.

He had the chance to compete against the legendary Tom Brady in a passing contest.

The Lightning quarterback was randomly chosen to go up against Brady, who is now a leading analyst for FOX’s NFL coverage, and he went on to defeat the seven-time Super Bowl champion, taking home a grand prize of $100,000.

What makes this whole story even more astounding is that Balanovich was completely unaware that he would be competing against the former New England/Tampa Bay quarterback. It all happened by coincidence.

The adventure began with a simple DM from Mr. Beast’s casting team to Cypress Bay head coach Bret Hood.

Without much detail apart from asking if Hood’s team was interested in participating in an event on November 4th, the Lightning coach quickly responded with a “yes.” From that point on, plans were set for Balanovich to face off against Brady, completely unaware of what was in store.

“They asked if they could interview me because I was the quarterback,” Balanovich recounted. “I had a 15-minute interview over the phone with their people. The next day after practice, we went to film the event. We were told it would be a pro-style combine. We thought it was other teams and quarterbacks competing against each other. We did not know anything.”

Not knowing exactly what lay ahead, the Cypress Bay team practiced together the day prior, while the Mr. Beast casting crew observed Balanovich closely.

They quickly recognized that Balanovich was a key player for the event, which was secretly set up as a one-on-one competition against Brady.

However, everyone else became aware on that special day just before the event that Balanovich would be up against one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history—everyone except Balanovich himself. His teammates and family members were in on the best-kept secret in South Florida as he prepared for what would become one of the most significant moments of his life.

“Initially, no one knew I was competing against Tom Brady. Not even my coach,” Balanovich shared. “My parents and brother were invited to the event along with a few other parents because they wanted fans there. I was separated from my team when I got to the stadium. My dad and brother, along with my teammates, were taken to a locker room to wait. They were told I would be competing against Tom Brady, even before I knew. According to my dad, their reaction was insane—they all just screamed.

My mom hadn’t made it to the stadium yet because she was working, so she didn’t find out until she got there and saw him on the field. She literally arrived just as the team was running onto the field. I discovered (Tom Brady) was my opponent while I was warming up on the field. The producers wanted to see how far I could throw, so I was taking some warm-up throws.”

It’s not every day you get to spot Brady casually walking onto the field in South Florida.

For Balanovich, his family, and teammates, the next surprising moment came after Mr. Beast’s cryptic remark, catching the Cypress Bay quarterback completely off-guard.

“Mr. Beast walked out and asked if I knew what was happening. And to be honest, I had no idea,” Balanovich recalled. “He said, ‘Good.’ Then Mr. Beast walked away and the next voice I heard was Tom’s as he came from the tunnel saying, ‘Let me see my competition.’ I looked over and saw it was Tom Brady. I was in complete shock, as were my parents and brother. It just felt unreal.”

Tom Brady stepped onto the South Dade Kia Field at Pitbull Stadium, where the FHSAA had recently held the high school football state championships.

Competing against Brady wasn’t without its challenges, as both quarterbacks aimed to hit four balloons positioned at varying distances of 10 to 50 yards.

Both passers managed to hit a few early targets without much trouble, but things turned tense when Balanovich fell behind by one, with Brady needing just one successful 50-yard throw to secure his victory.

“Well, it was raining that night and we had high winds too,” Balanovich noted. “We each went back and forth for a few rounds, but on my second-to-last throw, I got so close that I felt confident about taking that last shot. I just focused on staying calm and collected.”

Balanovich evened the score, with both competitors now needing to hit one more balloon to claim victory. Whether it was a direct hit or one that bounced, either way would count as a win.

“Mr. Beast indicated that if the ball bounces and pops the balloon, it still counts,” Balanovich stated. “With my next throw, the ball bounced and hit the balloon. My team erupted in celebration. It felt surreal knowing that I just beat the GOAT, who is renowned for his accuracy, in a throwing competition. And to top it off, doing it as part of a Mr. Beast video. Mr. Beast is the GOAT of YouTube. Never in my wildest dreams did I think this could happen.”

On November 4th, Balanovich, along with his family and teammates, found themselves needing to keep the details of the Mr. Beast passing contest under wraps for a brief period—just about four weeks, in fact.

The Mr. Beast video challenge, which involved a match-up against Brady, had to be kept confidential until its official release on YouTube on November 30th. Following that premiere, Balanovich’s recognition surged through social media and nationwide news outlets.

“My teammates and I were all excited to be participating in a Mr. Beast video challenge,” shared Balanovich. “We were not allowed to tell anyone about the video once it filmed, so for three weeks we had to keep it quiet. The only people that knew about the event were the players, coaches, parents, and staff that attended. No one reached out to me until after it aired on November 30th. Once the video aired, all of my friends, teammates, and family called and texted me saying congrats. I think a lot of people were in shock too because we kept it a secret. But that just made winning that much better.”

Balanovich noted, “My name is definitely more recognizable now. I was on the local news, which was cool. Inside Edition did an interview with me that was broadcasted nationally. I appeared on the radio with Larry Blustein, but the exciting part for me was being acknowledged by local sports outlets like MaxPreps, 305 Sports, the NFL, and Sports Illustrated. That is what every athlete dreams of.”

With this newfound attention, Balanovich is now striving for another aspiration: playing college football. During the 2024 season at Cypress Bay, he completed 106-of-175 passes for 1,551 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Mr. Beast presented Balanovich with the opportunity to compete against Brady, and the senior now hopes that someone will take a chance on him as he aims to showcase his skills at the collegiate level.

“My Hudl views have definitely increased, but I am still waiting for colleges to reach out or reply back,” Balanovich commented. “I am actively emailing and sending DMs to coaches in hopes someone will give me an opportunity. My dream is to play football at the next level. I feel like my journey is just beginning. I just need someone to give me a shot.”
