Sacramento Kings’ assistant coach Jordi Fernandez is reportedly being eyed by the Brooklyn Nets to take on the role of head coach, as per ESPN’s report on Monday night.
After a 21-33 start to the 2023-24 season under Jacque Vaughn, who was later fired, the Nets finished with an 11-17 record under interim coach Kevin Ollie.
Sources mention that Nets’ GM Sean Marks has held multiple interviews with potential candidates, and Fernandez has progressed to the next phase for a direct discussion with team owner Joe Tsai.
Fernandez, hailing from Barcelona, Spain at 41 years old, currently leads the Canadian national team, guiding them to a bronze finish at the 2023 FIBA World Cup. He has also worked as an assistant coach for the Spanish and Nigerian national teams.
In the NBA, Fernandez’s career started as a player development coach for the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2009 to 2013. He then transitioned to coaching the Cavaliers’ G League affiliate in Canton, Ohio for a year as an assistant and for two years as head coach, before joining the Denver Nuggets as an assistant coach from 2016 to 2022.
Fernandez became part of the Kings’ coaching staff in August 2022.
Brooklyn, wrapping up the season with a 32-50 record, landed in 11th place in the Eastern Conference, four games behind the final play-in spot. Having made the playoffs for the past five seasons, the Nets are now in search of their fifth head coach since the start of the 2019-20 season.

Wolves C Rudy Gobert (Personal) Uncertain for Game 2
The Impact of Rudy Gobert's Absence Against the Nuggets in Game 2
Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert’s availability is questionable for the upcoming Game 2 happening on Monday night in Denver for personal reasons.
In the opener of the Western Conference semifinal series on Saturday, Gobert played a significant role by contributing six points, grabbing 13 rebounds, making three blocks, and assisting three times in the team’s 106-99 victory.
Being a three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and a three-time All-Star, Gobert maintained an average of 14.0 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks in 76 games during the regular season.
Standing tall at 7-foot-1, the 31-year-old Gobert has an overall average of 12.7 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks throughout his career in 757 games for the Utah Jazz (2013-22) and the Timberwolves.
If Gobert is unable to play against the reigning champions, Naz Reid, who won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year this season, may step into the starting lineup.
