The return of Tyler Herro could potentially enhance the threat posed by the Miami Heat.

The Miami Heat hold a record of 43-34, positioning them at seventh place in the Eastern Conference. They are gearing up to face the Indiana Pacers in Indianapolis this Sunday.

Indiana (44-34) currently occupies sixth place, maintaining just a slim advantage over Miami.

The playoff guarantee extends to the top six teams in each conference, while teams from seven to 10 need to navigate through the play-in round.

In essence, the upcoming game on Sunday carries significant weight – and this is where Herro’s return becomes vital.

Following his comeback on Friday after a prolonged absence since Feb. 23, Herro showcased an impressive performance, contributing 17 points, six assists, and five rebounds during Miami’s 119-104 victory over the Houston Rockets.

“It’s just great to have him back,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said of Herro, who missed 20 games due to a foot injury. “As head coach, I didn’t forget what he brings to the table.”

Herro currently holds the second spot in scoring for the Heat with an average of 20.7 points, trailing behind Jimmy Butler (21.0).

“The skill level, the creativity, the speed,” Spoelstra said of Herro, “those are all things we need.”

Despite the considerable time away from the court, Herro displayed sharpness on Friday, recording zero turnovers while making 7 out of 14 shots. His only struggle was from beyond the 3-point arc, converting just 1 out of 4 attempts.

Overall, his performance was exceptional, prompting Spoelstra to allot him 25 minutes of playtime from the bench.

“I will probably get a stern ‘talking to’ from our training staff,” Spoelstra said of Herro’s heavy usage. “Let’s see how Tyler feels (for the Pacers game).”

Beyond the playoff ramifications, the upcoming clash on Sunday will be intriguing as the Heat have demonstrated superiority on the road (23-16) compared to their home games (20-18). Remarkably, among Eastern Conference teams, only the Boston Celtics have secured more victories away than Miami.

Contrastingly, Indiana has been equally efficient at home (24-15) as Miami has been away.

The distinguishing factor is that the Pacers lead the NBA in scoring (122.8) while Miami ranks 27th in this department (109.9).

Additionally, Indiana stands at the top in field-goal percentage (50.5) and assist-to-turnover ratio (2.37) in the league.

Fueling the Pacers is point guard Tyrese Haliburton, who leads the NBA in assists (11.0) and secures the second spot in scoring for Indiana with an average of 20.2 points.

In their most recent game on Friday against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Indiana triumphed with a 126-112 win. Haliburton’s contribution included a modest eight points but an impressive 11 assists.

“(Haliburton) should never be defined by a certain number of points,” Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. “He’s a master of facilitating for his teammates.”

During the Friday game, Haliburton broke the record for the most assists in a single season in the franchise’s history with 714 assists. The previous record was set by Mark Jackson in 1997-1998 with 713 assists.

“Mark was a really good player, and his record stood for a long time,” Carlisle said. “(Haliburton) will shatter his own record next season when he doesn’t miss 15 games.”

Pascal Siakam holds an average of 21.4 points and 7.8 rebounds in 37 games this season. Myles Turner leads the team in blocks (1.9) while maintaining an average of 16.8 points and 6.8 rebounds.

The Pacers also boast a formidable bench lineup, spearheaded by T.J. McConnell, Doug McDermott, Jalen Smith, and Obi Toppin.

“We’ve got a great group,” McConnell said. “I feel like our bench has an identity. We’re all excited. We’re all looking forward to the playoffs.”
