Kevin Durant continues to achieve feats, and retirement is not on the horizon.

As the Phoenix Suns take on the Atlanta Hawks on Thursday night, Durant will arrive at the arena as the eighth-highest scorer in the history of the NBA.

In Phoenix’s 115-102 triumph over the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday, Durant netted 22 points, surpassing Shaquille O’Neal‘s (28,596) total on the NBA’s all-time scoring list. Durant’s tally now stands at 28,610.

“Teammates throughout my whole career have encouraged me and inspired me along the way,” Durant said postgame. “So I’m nothing without those people and grateful I get to experience this in my lifetime.”

At 35, Durant hasn’t specified how much longer he intends to compete, but he remains less than 3,000 points behind Wilt Chamberlain, who holds the seventh spot with 31,419 points.

Despite his ongoing successful career, Durant mentioned that he hasn’t had the chance to reflect on the notable names he has overtaken in recent years.

“I’m still playing. I want to do a lot more in this game, so it’s kinda hard to sit back and bask in the glory a little bit,” Durant said. “I’m glad I was able to do this with a Suns jersey on.”

During Wednesday’s victory, Durant received valuable support. Grayson Allen tied the franchise record with nine 3-pointers for the third time this season, also reaching his season-high of 32 points.

“I got a lot of good looks off my teammates,” Allen said. “The ball kept finding me, and I just continued to let it fly.”

Allen has successfully connected on 42 of 75 three-point attempts (56 percent) over the past eight games and has achieved eight or more three-pointers three times during this period.

Although Phoenix (40-29) has secured victories in five of its last eight games, the team is currently not in a top-six playoff position. The Suns and the Dallas Mavericks (40-29) are both trailing the No. 6 Sacramento Kings (40-28) by a half-game in the Western Conference standings.

Atlanta (30-38) currently holds the final play-in position in the Eastern Conference.

Atlanta has a 1-3 record as they head into the final game of a five-game road trip. Fortunately, they have had several days to recuperate since their 136-105 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday.

LeBron James (27 points, 10 assists) and Anthony Davis (22 points, 15 rebounds, six assists) each made 10 of 14 field-goal attempts as the Lakers collectively shot 57.8 percent.

“I thought we were ready to play, (but) there’s two Hall of Fame players that were unselfish, and I thought they played really well,” Atlanta coach Quin Snyder said. “It’s hard to sustain a defensive effort against a team that’s playing the way they are offensively. When the ball isn’t going in, it’s even harder. They made us pay for any mistake we made.”

Atlanta’s Jalen Johnson contributed 25 points and nine rebounds before exiting in the fourth quarter due to his second right ankle injury this month. Johnson will be sidelined against the Suns.

Johnson previously injured the same ankle on March 6 against the Cleveland Cavaliers, causing him to miss the following three games.

Trae Young continues to be absent for the Hawks, having missed his 13th consecutive game following hand surgery.

Atlanta saw the return of big man Onyeka Okongwu, who had been sidelined for 13 games due to a sprained toe. Okongwu contributed 11 points and four rebounds in 19 minutes coming off the bench against the Lakers.

Atlanta has emerged victorious in their last four encounters against the Suns, including a 129-120 win at home on Feb. 2. In that matchup, Young posted 32 points and 15 assists for the Hawks, while Durant accumulated 35 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists for Phoenix.

Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert’s availability is questionable for the upcoming Game 2 happening on Monday night in Denver for personal reasons.

In the opener of the Western Conference semifinal series on Saturday, Gobert played a significant role by contributing six points, grabbing 13 rebounds, making three blocks, and assisting three times in the team’s 106-99 victory.

Being a three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and a three-time All-Star, Gobert maintained an average of 14.0 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks in 76 games during the regular season.

Standing tall at 7-foot-1, the 31-year-old Gobert has an overall average of 12.7 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks throughout his career in 757 games for the Utah Jazz (2013-22) and the Timberwolves.

If Gobert is unable to play against the reigning champions, Naz Reid, who won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year this season, may step into the starting lineup.
