Success in sports isn’t about how you commence but how you conclude. For teams that stumble at an inopportune moment, the silver lining lies in hoping that their adversaries perform well for the remainder of the season.
This narrative certainly resonated with Perry (Gilbert, Ariz.). The Pumas kicked off the season ranked No. 33 in the initial FAB 50 after securing the inaugural Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) open division state crown in 2222-23.
Perry exited the nation’s long-standing weekly national rankings earlier this season following losses to local Arizona squads, including Sunnyslope (Phoenix, Ariz.), the team they defeated in the previous year’s open title clash.
This week, the Pumas staged an impressive comeback as the highest-ranked of the six debutants at No. 34 after triumphing over then No. 38 Millennium (Goodyear, Ariz.) by a score of 71-67, retaining their AIA open division state title.
Despite Millennium holding an early 17-point lead, Perry managed to erode the deficit with crucial plays from guard Barron Silsby and the composed performance of All-American Koa Peat. Silsby scored 10 points in the second half, aiding Perry in overcoming a 41-32 halftime gap, while Peat, a junior and a returning Elite All-American first team member, concluded with 21 points, 13 rebounds, and four assists.
Millennium’s Sabien Cain concluded with 33 points, including an astounding seven 3-pointers within the initial 10 minutes of the game. Sunnyslope was the sole in-state team that Perry did not defeat, with their out-of-state defeats to No. 18 Archbishop Stepinac (White Plains, N.Y.) and No. 10 Harvard-Westlake (North Hollywood, Calif.), on two occasions.
On Tuesday, Harvard-Westlake will host No. 24 Roosevelt (Eastvale, Calif.) in the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) SoCal open division regional title game, with the victor facing either No. 37 Salesian (Richmond, Calif.) or unranked Riordan (San Francisco, Calif.) for the CIF Open Division state title on March 9 at the Golden One Center in Sacramento.
It is evident that Perry would benefit from a consecutive victory for Harvard-Westlake in the open state championship, while Salesian could overtake the Pumas if they succeed in clinching their last two matches to secure their maiden CIF open state title.
Perry now boasts a three-time AIA state title streak, with Peat yet to experience a defeat in an AIA playoff game throughout his illustrious three-year career. Perry defeated Basha (Chandler, Ariz.) in the semifinals, 83-79, with Peat delivering 35 points and 16 rebounds.
Another squad relishing a three-peat and ending the season strongly is No. 28 Sidwell Friends (Washington, D.C.), who seized the District of Columbia State Athletic Association (DCSAA) Class AA title with a 47-37 win over St. John’s (Washington, D.C.). The Quakers received 16 points from Acaden Lewis and 15 from Jalen Rougier-Roane in the championship game triumph.
The standout victory in terms of ranking advancement was the 53-52 semifinal victory against the then No. 16 Gonzaga (Washington, D.C.), with Lewis from the Quakers making a substantial impact with 21 points, five rebounds, and three assists.
Sidwell Friends has now secured three consecutive DCSAA state titles and four in the past five seasons, climbing 18 spots this week. The Purple Eagles, who were the runners-up in the WCAC Tournament to No. 3 Paul VI (Fairfax, Va.) on Monday, descend 13 places but can’t drop any further.
No. 30 Great Crossing (Georgetown, Ky.) suffered a sole loss in overtime to WCAC member Bishop O’Connell (Arlington, Va.), a team that Gonzaga shared victories with. No. 31 Oak Ridge (Orlando, Fla.) also faced defeat at the hands of Bishop O’Connell, alongside another loss to a team that Gonzaga bested: Westminster Academy (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.). Oak Ridge also faced defeat against the top-ranked team Montverde Academy of Florida.
This Friday, Oak Ridge will contend against No. 46 Winter Haven (Winter Haven, Fla.) in the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Class 7A semifinals. The other semifinal will feature Evans (Orlando, Fla.) against No. 2 Columbus (Miami), with the victors of each match slated for a Saturday evening showdown.
Besides Florida and California, another powerhouse state set to crown state champions this week is Texas. The University Interscholastic League (UIL) Class 6A Final Four will unfold at The Alamodome in San Antonio. Undefeated Plano East (Plano, Texas), ranked No. 5, will clash against Lake Ridge (Mansfield, Texas) in one semifinal, while No. 6 Stony Point (Round Rock, Texas) will face off against the new No. 49 Beaumont United (Beaumont, Texas) in the other.
Beaumont United will mark its fourth consecutive appearance in the state Final Four, whereas Stony Point’s sole loss was to Plano East.
Another captivating state final will occur in Georgia, where the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) Class AAAAAAA title match at the Macon Coliseum will feature No. 20 McEachern (Powder Springs, Ga.) against No. 35 Grayson (Loganville, Ga.) on Saturday evening. Grayson only suffered defeat at the hands of the state champion No. 25 Ridge View (Columbia, S.C.) and Perry.
The 2023-24 season will culminate with the Chipotle High School Basketball Nationals from April 4-6 at Brownsburg (Ind.), situated just outside Indianapolis. Should Columbus clinch a state title and the top four teams in the FAB 50, an invitation to the event is imminent. All tournament games will be broadcast live on ESPN platforms.
