The NBA Dunk Contest Falls Short From the Lack of Star Power

Once again, NBA All-Star Saturday proved to be a success, but one particular event may have fallen short.

The slam dunk challenge, which used to be the highlight of the entire weekend, no longer carries the same impact. It is now a hit-and-miss affair, with the potential to either dominate discussions for weeks or be forgotten by Monday afternoon.

This year’s competition saw reigning champion Mac McClung successfully defend his title, achieving a back-to-back victory. Jaylen Brown also participated, marking the hope for attracting more renowned players in the future.

McClung became the first back-to-back winner since Zach LaVine accomplished the feat in 2015 and 2016. Although he emerged victorious against Brown in the final round, this year’s event failed to capture the same excitement as the previous year.

Perhaps the anticipation was high due to McClung’s previous aerial displays, resulting in heightened expectations, leading to a somewhat lackluster atmosphere.

However, the fact that McClung primarily plays in the G-League adds a unique touch to his achievement. This could be seen as a critique on some of the full-time NBA players who seldom display such skills above the rim.

While McClung’s dunks were impressive, the audience in Indianapolis did not show the same level of enthusiasm. Although his initial dunk was a spectacle, the judges, including Reggie Miller and Kenny Smith, did not award him a perfect score of 50 as suggested during the live broadcast. Witnessing McClung execute that dunk in real-time was truly remarkable.

While each participant performed admirably, the absence of star players has been detrimental to the competition over the years. Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Jacob Toppin gave their best effort, but unfortunately, they were eliminated in the initial round. The final showdown between Brown and McClung provided the best matchup that could have been hoped for.

In essence, this year’s competition was dominated by Mac McClung, with everyone eager to see how he would surpass his previous performance. Brown brought some star power to the contest, but ultimately, it fell short.

Hopefully, more high-profile NBA players will consider participating in the dunk contest in the upcoming years. While the young talents showcase great potential, the NBA thrives on star presence, with more star power only enhancing the spectacle. Currently, the three-point contest seems to possess all the star power.

Stars Aligning

  • Damian Lillard = Winner
  • Tyrese Haliburton
  • Karl-Anthony Towns
  • Lauri Markkanen
  • Trae Young
  • Malik Beasley
  • Jalen Brunson
  • Donovan Mitchell

Nearly every participant in the three-point shootout on Saturday night can be considered a star in their own right. While Malik Beasley may not be classified as a “star player,” he is undoubtedly a solid NBA talent, showcasing a stellar performance from beyond the arc this season. Thus, his inclusion was well-deserved.

On the contrary, the other seven players are either the primary or secondary scoring options for their respective teams and are established stars.

Players like Mitchell, KAT, and Lillard are previous champions of the contest. Dame Time was once again evident as Lillard secured back-to-back victories, a feat not achieved since Jason Kapono in ’07 & 08.

Norman Powell, a current NBA player, expressed disappointment at being “snubbed” from this star-studded competition, despite his impressive three-point shooting statistics over the years.

“I really don’t know what the criteria is to get nominated… Being a top-3 three-point shooter the last 3-4 years… I don’t know. It’s just crazy to me… It is what it is. I’ll enjoy my extra days.”

This is the kind of excitement the dunk contest needs. There is no talk of being snubbed in the dunk challenge. Most big stars no longer have an inclination to participate. The competition experiences intermittent bursts of excitement; there are a few years where emerging stars surprise and captivate the audience, followed by dull seasons like this one.

The NBA must find a way to reintroduce the “star” back into the dunk segment of All-Star Saturday night. Following the game, McClung was questioned about his potential return for a three-peat next year, and his response indicated uncertainty. If he decides to participate again, it could be the main storyline for next year’s All-Star weekend.

The ambition to witness Mac McClung attempt a historic slam dunk contest three-peat is enticing. Nate Robinson is a three-time winner, achieving his first victory in ’06 before securing back-to-back wins in ’09 & ’10.

Efforts should be made to attract more stars like Brown to join the contest. Over the past decade, many prominent figures have avoided the dunk challenge. The era of epic showdowns between legends like Michael Jordan and Dominique Wilkins may never be replicated.

Similarly, the memorable face-offs between Dwight Howard and Nate Robinson continue to captivate fans. Even in the year 2000, Vince Carter left the audience in awe; that same contest featured talents like Steve Francis and Tracy McGrady.

If the NBA can consistently bring back those golden days, the dunk contest may regain some of its lost glory. Looking ahead to the next year, the potential for a Mac McClung three-peat already ignites curiosity. Hopefully, he returns to defend his title one last time.

Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert’s availability is questionable for the upcoming Game 2 happening on Monday night in Denver for personal reasons.

In the opener of the Western Conference semifinal series on Saturday, Gobert played a significant role by contributing six points, grabbing 13 rebounds, making three blocks, and assisting three times in the team’s 106-99 victory.

Being a three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and a three-time All-Star, Gobert maintained an average of 14.0 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks in 76 games during the regular season.

Standing tall at 7-foot-1, the 31-year-old Gobert has an overall average of 12.7 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks throughout his career in 757 games for the Utah Jazz (2013-22) and the Timberwolves.

If Gobert is unable to play against the reigning champions, Naz Reid, who won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year this season, may step into the starting lineup.
