Luka Doncic, Mavs Withstand Shorthanded Knicks

Luka Doncic (39 points) Highlights vs. New York Knicks

Luka Doncic recorded 39 points, 11 boards, and eight assists while the Dallas Mavericks managed to hold off a late surge from the undermanned New York Knicks, claiming a 122-108 victory on Thursday.

Tim Hardaway Jr. contributed 19 points for Dallas, as they maintained the lead throughout the game, securing their third consecutive win. Derrick Jones Jr. also made an impact with 18 points, followed by Kyrie Irving with 16, and Josh Green with 15.

Donte DiVincenzo sunk seven 3-pointers and led New York with 36 points. The Knicks were left with just seven active players after center Isaiah Hartenstein exited the game late in the second quarter due to a sore left Achilles.

Hart achieved 23 points, 12 assists, and 10 rebounds for New York, who suffered only their second loss in 12 games. Miles McBride also contributed 21 points, followed by Precious Achiuwa with 13 points and 16 rebounds, and Hartenstein with 10 points.

Dallas held a 20-point lead late in the third quarter before the Knicks narrowed the gap to 111-103 with 3:37 left in the game.

The Mavericks thwarted the Knicks’ comeback attempt, pushing ahead 121-105 with 1:38 remaining after Hardaway and Doncic each landed back-to-back 3-pointers.

The depleted Knicks were missing key starters Jalen Brunson (right ankle sprain), Julius Randle (dislocated shoulder), and OG Anunoby (elbow surgery).

Additionally, New York was without four players who had been traded to the Detroit Pistons for Bojan Bogdanovic and Alec Burks earlier in the day.

Dallas led by six at the end of the first, increasing their lead to 34-24 with a 3-pointer from Hardaway early in the second quarter. The Mavericks shot 50 percent in the first half and went into halftime with a 59-48 lead.

DiVincenzo led all scorers in the first half with 16 points, fueled by four 3-pointers. Meanwhile, Doncic contributed 12 points and eight assists for Dallas.

Doncic orchestrated an 18-6 run, scoring 11 points to expand the Mavericks’ lead to 84-64 late in the third quarter. Dallas carried a 16-point advantage into the final period.

Dallas secured their fourth consecutive win against New York, shooting an overall 52 percent from the field and converting 18 of 42 (43 percent) from beyond the arc.

New York shot 44 percent overall, including 38 percent from beyond the arc, making 14 of 37 attempts.

Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert’s availability is questionable for the upcoming Game 2 happening on Monday night in Denver for personal reasons.

In the opener of the Western Conference semifinal series on Saturday, Gobert played a significant role by contributing six points, grabbing 13 rebounds, making three blocks, and assisting three times in the team’s 106-99 victory.

Being a three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and a three-time All-Star, Gobert maintained an average of 14.0 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks in 76 games during the regular season.

Standing tall at 7-foot-1, the 31-year-old Gobert has an overall average of 12.7 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks throughout his career in 757 games for the Utah Jazz (2013-22) and the Timberwolves.

If Gobert is unable to play against the reigning champions, Naz Reid, who won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year this season, may step into the starting lineup.
