Magic Aiming to Gain Momentum by Defeating Pistons

Detroit Pistons vs Orlando Magic

The Orlando Magic are looking to put an end to their three-year playoff absence, and their upcoming schedule over the next month provides an opportunity to boost their chances, with three games scheduled against the Pistons, including a clash in Detroit on Sunday afternoon.

Orlando has a 2-1 record in its ongoing five-game road trip, responding to a narrow defeat against Dallas with convincing victories over San Antonio and Minnesota, with the latest one being a 108-106 win.

The team displayed resilience by overcoming a 17-point deficit in the first half against the Timberwolves and an eight-point gap in the fourth quarter.

“They got their run early in the game,” Magic coach Jamahl Mosley said. “So our guys didn’t panic. We continued to fight, continued to play hard, realized what we needed to do better defensively, as well as offensively.”

Orlando managed to limit the Timberwolves to only 18 points in the fourth quarter.

“The past two years, we were down a lot and learning how to play from behind and continue to come back,” guard Jalen Suggs said. “Now, we are learning how to close them out. Some nights are better than others, but we continue learning and we can see the progress that we are making. We are having fun doing it and everybody is growing in every aspect.”

All-Star forward Paolo Banchero, who tallied 23 points in the last game, has been consistently leading the team in scoring for the past seven games. During the initial encounter with the Pistons this season, Banchero and Franz Wagner combined for 51 points in a commanding 123-91 triumph on December 8.

Wagner contributed 19 points and five assists, while Wendell Carter Jr. added 18 points and 12 rebounds against the Timberwolves.

Orlando’s road trip will conclude with a game against Miami on Tuesday, followed by a return to Detroit on February 24 and a home fixture against the Pistons on March 3.

Meanwhile, Detroit has already secured a losing record, currently standing at 6-42 after a recent 136-125 defeat to the Los Angeles Clippers. The Pistons struggled defensively, allowing the Clippers to shoot 59.6 percent from the field and 48.3 percent from beyond the arc, in addition to conceding 25 points from 17 turnovers.

In their previous game, a 128-121 loss to Cleveland, Detroit’s turnovers proved costly, as the Cavaliers capitalized with 29 points off 19 Detroit errors.

“You can’t have turnovers and some of the undisciplined errors we had against a team like that,” coach Monty Williams said after Detroit’s latest loss. “It’s something that has hurt us all season long. When we take care of (the ball), we have a better chance of success.”

Jaden Ivey led the team with 28 points but also committed three turnovers, while Cade Cunningham and Bojan Bogdanovic each had four turnovers against the Clippers.

“That’s what it came down to tonight,” Ivey said. “I wish I would have cut some of my turnovers down but as a whole group, we turned the ball over tonight and they converted 25 points off turnovers. That’s the game right there. We shot 50 percent from the field, 40 percent from the 3-point line. We’ve got to give ourselves a chance and stop turning the ball over.”

After the upcoming game on Sunday, Detroit will embark on a challenging West Coast trip consisting of five games before the All-Star break.

Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert’s availability is questionable for the upcoming Game 2 happening on Monday night in Denver for personal reasons.

In the opener of the Western Conference semifinal series on Saturday, Gobert played a significant role by contributing six points, grabbing 13 rebounds, making three blocks, and assisting three times in the team’s 106-99 victory.

Being a three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and a three-time All-Star, Gobert maintained an average of 14.0 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks in 76 games during the regular season.

Standing tall at 7-foot-1, the 31-year-old Gobert has an overall average of 12.7 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks throughout his career in 757 games for the Utah Jazz (2013-22) and the Timberwolves.

If Gobert is unable to play against the reigning champions, Naz Reid, who won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year this season, may step into the starting lineup.
