Celtics Surpass Pelicans in Fourth Quarter

Celtics overcome 17-point deficit to beat Zion Williamson, Pelicans 118-112

Jayson Tatum delivered 28 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists to aid the Celtics in avoiding a third consecutive defeat at home, as Boston triumphed over the New Orleans Pelicans 118-112 on Monday.

Jaylen Brown contributed 22 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists for the Celtics, who overcame an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter. The Celtics also received 20 points from Jrue Holiday and 17 from Derrick White.

The Pelicans suffered their third consecutive defeat, all at the hands of teams that belong to the top four in terms of winning percentage in the NBA. New Orleans previously lost to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday and the Milwaukee Bucks on Saturday.

Brandon Ingram registered 28 points and Zion Williamson concluded with 26 for the Pelicans. The Celtics trailed 92-81 at the beginning of the fourth quarter but engineered a 23-6 surge to claim a 104-98 lead.

White secured the lead for the Celtics when he sank a 3-pointer, propelling Boston ahead at 99-98 with 5:05 minutes left to play. This was one of three successful treys by White in the final 6:22 minutes.

Starting center Kristaps Porzingis (ankle) and backup center Luke Kornet (hamstring) were unavailable for Boston.

The Celtics led 8-5 early, but the Pelicans seized control with a 9-0 run and held a 36-25 advantage after the first quarter. The Pelicans shot 57.7 percent from the field in the opening quarter and were successful on 5 of 9 3-point attempts.

The lead extended to 44-27 as a result of a pair of Williamson free throws, finalizing an 8-0 run with 8:53 left in the second quarter. The Celtics reduced the deficit to seven points with a Tatum layup at 2:55 before halftime. The Pelicans led 60-50 at halftime.

Boston initiated the second half with a 10-2 run and trailed 62-60 with 9:39 left in the third quarter.

The Celtics attained a 74-73 lead with a Sam Hauser 3-pointer at 4:51 to go in the quarter and held a 76-73 lead before the Pelicans initiated a 14-3 run to surge ahead 87-79.

New Orleans led 87-81 at the start of the fourth quarter.
