Pacers Could Potentially Get Tyrese Haliburton Back When They Visit Celtics

Tyrese Haliburton: "Celtics Are BEST Team in NBA"

The hope is for the All-Star guard Tyrese Haliburton to rejoin the Indiana Pacers lineup as they travel to play against the Boston Celtics on Tuesday.

Haliburton had been absent for 10 out of the last 11 games due to a hamstring strain, but he participated in the team practice on Monday. He sustained the injury during a win over Boston on Jan. 8, and made a comeback in the Pacers’ game at Portland on Jan. 19, only to then miss the subsequent five games.

As of Monday night, Haliburton’s participation in Tuesday’s game was uncertain. Haliburton, who had been chosen as an Eastern Conference starter for this year’s All-Star Game scheduled to take place in Indianapolis on Feb. 18, is currently averaging 23.6 points and a league-leading 12.6 assists per game this season.

“The plan is to play (Tuesday) for me,” Haliburton said at Monday’s practice. “I’ll see how I feel in the morning when I wake up. That will kind of dictate that answer. But I feel good, ready to go. I think that the medical staff has done a good job preparing me to get back. Hopefully I’m ready to go tomorrow.”

The Pacers extended their winning streak to three games after a 116-110 victory over Memphis at home on Sunday.

Bennedict Mathurin scored 24 points coming off the bench for the Pacers, who took a 110-107 lead when Jalen Smith made a 3-pointer with 3:10 left to play. Smith concluded with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Mathurin shot 9 of 14 from the field, making three 3-pointers, and also secured seven rebounds. Apart from Haliburton, the Pacers were without backup point guard T.J. McConnell (away due to personal reasons) and center Myles Turner (suffering from back spasms).

“I thought Mathurin was tremendous,” remarked Indiana coach Rick Carlisle. “In the first half when we couldn’t get anything going, he was making the right play every time. The right drive, the right pullup, the right read. He gave us a lot of life in the first and second quarters. Tremendous growth by him this year with those things.”

The Celtics avoided a third consecutive defeat at home by defeating New Orleans 118-112 on Monday. Boston was behind by 11 points early in the fourth quarter but managed to outscore the Pelicans 37-20 in the final 10 minutes.

“We continued to defend regardless of how our offense was going,” Boston coach Joe Mazzulla said. “I think that’s the key. I thought we stayed the course, especially in the second half.”

Derrick White showed his skills by hitting five of six field-goal attempts in the fourth quarter and contributing 13 points. He landed a 3-pointer that provided the Celtics with a 99-98 lead with 5:05 to go, and then made another successful three-point shot, increasing the lead to 107-101, with 3:05 remaining.

“Things weren’t going well for us most of that game, but we stuck together, got the stops that we needed to and made some shots (at the other end),” White said. “When things aren’t going well, it’s good to get a win still.”

Tuesday will mark the fifth encounter between the Celtics and the Pacers this season. The teams have split the victories in the initial four meetings, three of which were played in Indiana.

Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert’s availability is questionable for the upcoming Game 2 happening on Monday night in Denver for personal reasons.

In the opener of the Western Conference semifinal series on Saturday, Gobert played a significant role by contributing six points, grabbing 13 rebounds, making three blocks, and assisting three times in the team’s 106-99 victory.

Being a three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and a three-time All-Star, Gobert maintained an average of 14.0 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks in 76 games during the regular season.

Standing tall at 7-foot-1, the 31-year-old Gobert has an overall average of 12.7 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks throughout his career in 757 games for the Utah Jazz (2013-22) and the Timberwolves.

If Gobert is unable to play against the reigning champions, Naz Reid, who won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year this season, may step into the starting lineup.
