Bucks Appoint Veteran Doc Rivers as Their New Head Coach

Milwaukee Bucks introduce Doc Rivers as new head coach

As per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Adrian Griffin will be replaced by Doc Rivers. CNN Sports first reported the move on Tuesday night, causing a stir across the Internet.

Just one day earlier, Milwaukee dismissed Griffin after only 43 games into his debut as head coach. Griffin had led the Bucks to their seventh-best start through 43 games in franchise history (30-13).

Rivers was already associated with the Bucks during Griffin’s tenure, as mentioned in a report from The Athletic. The former Coach of the Year in 1999-2000 had been informally advising Griffin “at the behest of the Bucks.”

Rivers had also been a commentator for ESPN’s NBA broadcasts and had regularly appeared as an NBA analyst on The Bill Simmons Show hosted by The Ringer.

Since the start of the 21st century, Rivers has been with his fifth team, having previously coached the Orlando Magic, Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Clippers, and Philadelphia 76ers.

He also held an executive position with the Clippers from 2013 to 2017. Since his departure from Boston in 2013, Rivers has not managed to guide a team to the Conference Finals despite having a plethora of talent at his disposal.

After parting ways with Boston’s Big 3 – Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, and Ray Allen, Rivers went on to coach players like Chris Paul, Blake Griffin, Kawhi Leonard, Paul George, Joel Embiid, and James Harden, all during their prime.

This impressive list also includes Hall of Famers such as Tracy McGrady, Ben Wallace, and Grant Hill from his early days with the Magic.

Now, we can add Giannis Antentokounmpo and Damian Lillard to that list. It remains to be seen how much Doc can help elevate their game.

In the opener of the Western Conference semifinal series on Saturday, Gobert played a significant role by contributing six points, grabbing 13 rebounds, making three blocks, and assisting three times in the team’s 106-99 victory.

Being a three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and a three-time All-Star, Gobert maintained an average of 14.0 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks in 76 games during the regular season.

Standing tall at 7-foot-1, the 31-year-old Gobert has an overall average of 12.7 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks throughout his career in 757 games for the Utah Jazz (2013-22) and the Timberwolves.

If Gobert is unable to play against the reigning champions, Naz Reid, who won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year this season, may step into the starting lineup.
