Draymond Green’s Suspensions Mentioned as Cause for Team USA Exclusion

USA Basketball will not include two-time gold medalist Draymond Green in its player roster as it finalizes a lineup for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Grant Hill, the executive director of USA Basketball, referenced Green’s two suspensions this season with the Golden State Warriors as the explanation for the absence of the defensive specialist when the 41-player roster was disclosed on Tuesday.
“His contributions have been significant, and he is a real part of the legacy of this organization for his excellence,” Hill told reporters Wednesday via video conference call.
“But (because) of what’s transpired this year, we made a decision to not have (Green) on this list with this particular point in time with the process.”
The first of Green’s two notable on-court altercations this season occurred on Nov. 14 when he restrained Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert during a scuffle between the teams.
The NBA penalized Green with a five-game suspension for that incident.
On Dec. 12 in Phoenix, Green struck Suns center Jusuf Nurkic in the face as the Warriors forward waved his arms. The league handed Green an indefinite suspension which ultimately lasted 12 games before he was reinstated.
Furthermore, Green missed an additional four games after he returned to Warriors practices.
The list of players named to the Team USA player pool consists of a blend of NBA young and veteran stars:
- Bam Adebayo
- Jarrett Allen
- Paolo Banchero
- Desmond Bane
- Scottie Barnes
- Devin Booker
- Mikal Bridges
- Jaylen Brown

Golden State head coach Steve Kerr, who indicated that Green is a major component of the Warriors’ leadership core, is also the national team coach.
Green commenced counseling, in accordance with his penalty, before the Warriors and Commissioner Adam Silver deemed him fit to return.
“We all understand and certainly have great respect and sensitivity to this particular period in his career, and he’s working through some things both on and off the court,” Hill said.
“And so we at USA Basketball wanted to support him on his journey and we just didn’t feel that playing over the summer gives him the best opportunity to do what he needs to do.”
Green, who has played only once — a loss on Jan. 15 to the Memphis Grizzlies — since his indefinite suspension, was poised to return to action when the Warriors play the Atlanta Hawks at home on Wednesday.
The Warriors’ previous two games were called off following the passing of assistant coach Dejan Milojevic.

Wolves C Rudy Gobert (Personal) Uncertain for Game 2
The Impact of Rudy Gobert's Absence Against the Nuggets in Game 2
Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert’s availability is questionable for the upcoming Game 2 happening on Monday night in Denver for personal reasons.
In the opener of the Western Conference semifinal series on Saturday, Gobert played a significant role by contributing six points, grabbing 13 rebounds, making three blocks, and assisting three times in the team’s 106-99 victory.
Being a three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and a three-time All-Star, Gobert maintained an average of 14.0 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks in 76 games during the regular season.
Standing tall at 7-foot-1, the 31-year-old Gobert has an overall average of 12.7 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks throughout his career in 757 games for the Utah Jazz (2013-22) and the Timberwolves.
If Gobert is unable to play against the reigning champions, Naz Reid, who won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year this season, may step into the starting lineup.
