Indiana Pacers Hold Off Boston Celtics But Suffer Loss of Tyrese Haliburton to Injury

Bennedict Mathurin secured the Indiana Pacers’ 133-131 victory over the Boston Celtics with two successful free throws in the closing 0.6 seconds of the fourth quarter on Monday night in Indianapolis.

The match was tied with 2 seconds left when Indiana inbounded the ball to Mathurin, who was fouled by Kristaps Porzingis during a 3-point attempt. Following the successful free throws, Mathurin intentionally missed the third shot. Boston rebounded the miss and called a timeout with 0.3 seconds remaining. Although Luke Kornet’s tip-in at the buzzer could have leveled the game, the ball struck the rim and bounced out.

For the Pacers, Mathurin scored the highest with 26 points, with the team making 19 of their 40 3-point tries (47.5 percent). Aaron Nesmith contributed 17 points, while Myles Turner chipped in with 16 points and eight rebounds.

Despite Jaylen Brown achieving a season-high of 40 points for the Celtics, they suffered a loss. Jrue Holiday contributed 21 points, six rebounds, and six assists, and Porzingis concluded with 19 points, six rebounds, and seven assists.

The victory may have come at a significant cost for Indiana. In the second quarter, Pacers point guard Tyrese Haliburton slipped during a drive to the basket and had to be assisted off the court due to a hamstring injury. He did not return to the game but had already accrued seven points, two rebounds, and six assists in 13 minutes before getting injured.

Boston had to play without forwards Sam Hauser (shoulder) and Jayson Tatum (ankle). In their previous encounter where the Celtics secured a 118-101 victory over the Pacers, Tatum delivered 38 points, 13 rebounds, and six assists.

Both Bruce Brown and Andrew Nembhard returned to the Indiana lineup. Nembhard had missed the last three games due to a back sprain, while Bruce Brown was absent from the previous match against Boston due to a right knee bone bruise.

The Celtics held a 34-33 lead after the first quarter and a 68-59 advantage at halftime. However, Indiana outscored Boston 44-33 in the third quarter and entered the final quarter leading 103-101. The 44 points scored by the Pacers in the third quarter represent the most points the Celtics have conceded in a single quarter this season.

Boston missed nine of its 29 free throw attempts.

Being a three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and a three-time All-Star, Gobert maintained an average of 14.0 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks in 76 games during the regular season.

Standing tall at 7-foot-1, the 31-year-old Gobert has an overall average of 12.7 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks throughout his career in 757 games for the Utah Jazz (2013-22) and the Timberwolves.
