Pistons and Jazz Aim to Build On Recent Wins When They Face One Another

When Detroit Pistons and Utah Jazz clash in Salt Lake City on Wednesday, both squads will strive to continue their recent success — one breaking a losing streak and the other aiming for an elusive triple-double.

The Pistons halted their ominous NBA record-tying 28-game losing streak by triumphing over the Toronto Raptors with a 129-127 victory last weekend. However, their following match saw them endure a 136-113 blowout loss at the hands of the Houston Rockets on Monday, a bitter setback to digest.

Coach Monty Williams acknowledged the impact of the victory by stating, “I considered it all day. When you’re battling for a win as we were for so long and you attain it, I’m sure there’s emotional stuff that I can’t explain. But in our current circumstance, we need to rebound swiftly.”

Former Jazz players Alec Burks and Bojan Bogdanovic contributed 21 and 14 points, respectively, for the Pistons against the Rockets. Additionally, Jaden Ivey scored 19 points and Jalen Duren secured 14 rebounds along with a dozen points.

“We are among the youngest teams in the league, so no one should outmatch us, and that’s exactly what happened tonight,” Bogdanovic noted. “They somewhat outpaced and outperformed us, and that pattern should come to a halt.”

Utah played a part in Detroit’s historic run of losses, as Kelly Olynyk’s 27-point haul propelled the Jazz to a 119-111 win on Dec. 21, marking the Pistons’ 25th straight defeat.

Describing that victory, Jazz coach Will Hardy labeled it as “a very effective team triumph for us,” happening at the tail end of a road back-to-back.

Utah trumped that performance on Monday night by orchestrating an astonishing 87-point reversal in a 127-90 victory over Dallas. This came as a stark contrast to their previous encounter on Dec. 6, in which the Mavericks thrashed the Jazz 147-97.

“A shift of 87 points is quite remarkable,” expressed Jazz forward Lauri Markkanen, who delivered 17 points against the Mavericks. “It’s satisfying to kick off the year on the right foot.”

However, the big highlight of the New Year’s Day game was yet to come.

Jordan Clarkson put an end to Utah’s near-16-year triple-double drought, tallying 20 points, 11 assists, and 10 rebounds against the Mavericks. Not since Feb. 13, 2008, when Carlos Boozer amassed 22 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists against the Seattle Supersonics in a 112-93 win, had a Jazz player recorded a regular-season triple-double.

In 1,256 regular-season games, opposing players achieved 1,205 triple-doubles during this dry spell for the Jazz, according to the team.

Clarkson’s achievement triggered a raucous celebration from Jazz fans and teammates, marking the first triple-double by a Jazz player off the bench since Mark Eaton’s 12 points, 14 rebounds, and 12 blocks on Feb. 5, 1983.

“It meant a lot,” shared Clarkson. “Honestly, I think I’m the — well, I am — the longest-serving player here. Just breaking that record, seeing all the team and the guys, it just felt good. … It was a very cool little milestone to put on my list.”

Even the former NBA Sixth Man of the Year received a congratulatory message from Boozer, who texted him, “Congrats on the triple-double.” Boozer had no idea he’d have to wait 5,801 days to send it.

Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert’s availability is questionable for the upcoming Game 2 happening on Monday night in Denver for personal reasons.

In the opener of the Western Conference semifinal series on Saturday, Gobert played a significant role by contributing six points, grabbing 13 rebounds, making three blocks, and assisting three times in the team’s 106-99 victory.

Being a three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and a three-time All-Star, Gobert maintained an average of 14.0 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks in 76 games during the regular season.

Standing tall at 7-foot-1, the 31-year-old Gobert has an overall average of 12.7 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks throughout his career in 757 games for the Utah Jazz (2013-22) and the Timberwolves.

If Gobert is unable to play against the reigning champions, Naz Reid, who won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year this season, may step into the starting lineup.
