Pistons Seek to End Historic Losing Streak Against Hawks

The Detroit Pistons are set to break their unprecedented 23-game losing run on Monday as they face the Atlanta Hawks, a team that has suffered six defeats in their last seven matches. Only Jets enthusiasts had expectations for Aaron Rodgers to return.

The Pistons were heavily defeated by the Milwaukee Bucks 146-114 on Saturday and have not clinched a victory since October 28, when they played against Chicago in the third encounter of the season. The Hawks were defeated 127-119 by Cleveland on Saturday, ending a three-game road trip and marking the conclusion of their five-game losing streak in Toronto the previous day.

This will mark the second encounter between the two teams. Atlanta emerged victorious with a 125-120 score on November 14 in Detroit. During that game, the Hawks’ Dejounte Murray became only the third player in the franchise’s history to achieve 30-plus points, 10-plus assists, 5-plus rebounds, and 3-plus steals in a match. Trae Young has accomplished this feat twice.

“We cannot afford to commence games devoid of the resilience and fortitude that we occasionally exhibit,” remarked Detroit coach Monty Williams after Milwaukee secured a 24-point lead in the first quarter. “We have been inconsistent in displaying it.” Detroit aims to avoid equalling the league record for the longest losing streak in a single season at 26 games. The current record is jointly held by the 2010-11 Cleveland Cavaliers and the 2013-14 Philadelphia 76ers. The 76ers underwent a 28-game losing run that transpired from the 2014-15 season into the 2015-16 season.

“There is a profound anguish that emanates from this experience,” Williams acknowledged. “Typically, you only encounter this when you reach the playoffs. We have the opportunity to confront this now, and as we move forward, we have continuously referred to it, and we never want to regress once we overcome it.”

“I believe these types of moments enable you to advance in a proper manner as you appreciate the significance of discipline every single day.” The Pistons may once again have to cope without Isaiah Stewart, who was absent from the previous game due to a sprained left shoulder.

Atlanta also faced a sluggish start in their last game. The Hawks trailed by 23 points in the first half against Cleveland, who were missing starters Evan Mobley and Darius Garland.

“We dug ourselves into far too deep of a pit,” stated Young. “It is more about effort and energy and, at times, about caring. That is what enabled us to stage a comeback in the game. You cannot secure a victory in this league if you only perform well in one quarter or three. You need to give your all in all four quarters.” Atlanta was aided by the return of De’Andre Hunter, who collected 18 points upon his return after missing three games due to discomfort in his right knee.

However, the Hawks were without their prominent reserve player, Bogdan Bogdanovic, who had achieved a career-best 40 points against Denver a week ago. Atlanta continues to miss the presence of rising star Jalen Johnson, who has been sidelined for 10 consecutive games due to a left wrist injury.

Young continues to maintain impressive statistics worthy of an All-Star. He currently averages 28 points, 10.8 assists, and 1.3 steals in 35.9 minutes per game. In his last three matches, he scored 35 points or more and achieved 10 or more assists. In his most recent game against the Cavs, he amassed 35 points, shooting 11-for-21 with a 7-for-12 success from beyond the arc.

Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert’s availability is questionable for the upcoming Game 2 happening on Monday night in Denver for personal reasons.

In the opener of the Western Conference semifinal series on Saturday, Gobert played a significant role by contributing six points, grabbing 13 rebounds, making three blocks, and assisting three times in the team’s 106-99 victory.

Being a three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and a three-time All-Star, Gobert maintained an average of 14.0 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks in 76 games during the regular season.

Standing tall at 7-foot-1, the 31-year-old Gobert has an overall average of 12.7 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks throughout his career in 757 games for the Utah Jazz (2013-22) and the Timberwolves.

If Gobert is unable to play against the reigning champions, Naz Reid, who won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year this season, may step into the starting lineup.
