Miami Heat Aim to Make It Two From Two Against Hornets This Week

Just beyond the first quarter mark of the NBA season, the Miami Heat have already suffered four losses when they were in front by at least 16 points.

Against the visiting Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday night, the Miami Heat will endeavor to seize a lead and maintain it — a task easier said than done in the NBA.

In Charlotte on Monday, the Heat held a lead of as much as 14 points but had to cling on for a 116-114 victory. Terry Rozier of Charlotte, who nailed eight 3-pointers and registered a game-high 34 points, almost claimed the win with a shot from half-court that rebounded off the backboard at the buzzer.

“We displayed determination at the end,” remarked Duncan Robinson, who topped the scoring for Miami with 24 points. “However, we must enhance our management of leads.”
Perchance there’s a rationale for those challenges as the Heat are competing without their top two point-scorers: Tyler Herro (ankle injury) was absent for his 15th consecutive game on Monday, while Bam Adebayo (hip) has skipped six of Miami’s past nine matches. Herro compiled an average of 22.9 points in eight games, and Adebayo is sustaining an average of 22.3.
The sole healthy component of Miami’s “Big Three” is Jimmy Butler, who is maintaining an average of 21.9 points, 5.1 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.2 steals.
Miami is 2-0 against Charlotte this season, but the Heat have secured those victories by an average margin of just four points.
Meanwhile, the Hornets have recorded a 2-4 tally since LaMelo Ball went down with an ankle injury on Nov. 26. Ball leads the Hornets in scoring (24.7) and assists (8.2).
By contrast, Hornets coach Steve Clifford opined that his team is competing capably without their star player.

“I believe that our shot selection has improved in the past five or six games,” asserted Clifford. “At the beginning of the season, we were registering a lot of points in the paint. However, we were not attempting or converting many 3-pointers.”
“At present, we are achieving a better equilibrium.”

The Hornets converted 41.5 percent of their 3-pointers on Monday (17 of 41).
Charlotte’s Miles Bridges stated that he and his teammates have adapted to the absence of Ball by attaining more evenly-distributed scoring.

“That’s the approach we need to adopt with Melo absent,” stated Bridges. “We have to be assertive every game.”

Ball was named the NBA’s Rookie of the Year in 2021 and an All-Star in 2022. Nonetheless, he has been susceptible to injuries; last season, he was restricted to just 36 games due to an ankle fracture.

With Ball sidelined, Rozier — who is in the midst of his fifth consecutive season registering at least 18 points per game — serves as Charlotte’s primary scorer. Rozier is maintaining an average of 23.6 points and 7.7 assists, and he is on course to achieve career bests in both categories.

The Hornets continue to face challenges as a franchise. The team owns the lengthiest ongoing playoff drought in the NBA at seven seasons. Since Charlotte re-entered the NBA in 2004-2005, there have been no playoff series victories.

Hope for the future is embodied in the performance of rookie Brandon Miller, the NBA’s No. 2 overall pick this year. He is sustaining an average of 14.6 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.2 assists, and he is shooting at a 40.2 percent rate on 3-pointers.
“He’s a tremendous talent,” commented Heat coach Erik Spoelstra on Miller. “He’s being coached and held accountable to the specifics of winning, and, for a young player, that holds the utmost significance.”

Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert’s availability is questionable for the upcoming Game 2 happening on Monday night in Denver for personal reasons.

In the opener of the Western Conference semifinal series on Saturday, Gobert played a significant role by contributing six points, grabbing 13 rebounds, making three blocks, and assisting three times in the team’s 106-99 victory.

Being a three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and a three-time All-Star, Gobert maintained an average of 14.0 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks in 76 games during the regular season.

Standing tall at 7-foot-1, the 31-year-old Gobert has an overall average of 12.7 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks throughout his career in 757 games for the Utah Jazz (2013-22) and the Timberwolves.

If Gobert is unable to play against the reigning champions, Naz Reid, who won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year this season, may step into the starting lineup.
