NBA G League Franchise of the Year: Santa Cruz Warriors

The league pronounced the Santa Cruz Warriors the 2023-24 NBA G League Franchise of the Year, a milestone that has been achieved by the team for the fourth occasion, inclusive of the award’s inception during the 2017-18 season. This year’s tribute also marks the third laurel for the squad in the previous four years (2020-21, 2021-22, 2023-24).

“The Warriors are honored to accept the Franchise of the Year recognition for the fourth time,” said Santa Cruz Warriors President Chris Murphy. “This award is a celebration of our collective effort, dedication and synergy as a team, and we are honored to share this recognition with the entire Santa Cruz community.”

The Santa Cruz Warriors led the league in ticket revenue and sponsorship proceeds, also setting a new record in the latter category for the league. Their social media platforms boast more than 400,130 followers on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, and YouTube. The team rounded off the 2023-24 season with an impressive 18-game full house run.

Within the local sphere, Santa Cruz’s athletes, coaching staff, and front office personnel dedicated over 1,200 hours to volunteering this period. They raised upwards of $94,300 for neighborhood charities through donated items, philanthropic gatherings, Jerseys for Charity Nights, and in-match donations.

Through their “Swishes for Dishes” program, the Sea Dubs in partnership with Kaiser Permanente and The Athletes’ Corner, contributed 60,830 meals to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Cruz County.

On the court, the Santa Cruz Warriors tallied a total 31-19 win-loss card (11-5 in the Showcase Cup, 20-14 regular season), solidifying them as the third-best within the NBA G League. The Sea Dubs penetrated the NBA G League playoffs for the eighth time within their 12-year history but were ultimately bested by the Stockton Kings in the Western Conference Semifinals.

Three of the Warriors’ players inked NBA deals (Pat Spencer, GSW; Gui Santos, GSW; and Javonte Green, CHI). Additionally, two athletes transitioned from dual agreements to full NBA contracts with the Golden State Warriors (Lester Quinones and Usman Garuba).

Past honorees of the Franchise of the Year Award include the Wisconsin Herd (2023), Raptors 905 (2020), and the Texas Legends (2019).

NBA G League Team Executive of the Year: Steve Jbara, President, Grand Rapids Gold

Endorsed by his peers, Grand Rapids Gold’s Steve Jbara has been honored with the Team Executive of the Year laurel. As founder and leader of the Gold, an affiliate of the Denver Nuggets in the G League established in 2014 as a Detroit Pistons affiliate known as the Drive, before rebranding in 2021 following collaboration with the Nuggets, Jbara has played a critical part in the franchise’s attainment of this year’s President’s Choice Award.

NBA G League President’s Choice Award: Grand Rapids Gold

The Grand Rapids Gold have become the third recipients of the coveted President’s Choice Award. Prior winners of this award count the Iowa Wolves (2023) and Wisconsin Herd (2022) among their ranks.

NBA G League Retailer of the Year: Austin Spurs

The Austin Spurs have captured the Retailer of the Year designation, recognizing their initiative in amplifying retail turnover, cross-functional integration of their line-ups, and the advancement of retail touchpoints.

The 2023-24 season saw Austin launch exclusive city-themed merchandize, catalyzing a 168 percent uplift in offsite trade and a 77 percent surge in results compared to the preceding year’s circuit with the inclusion of two more clash arenas.

Collectively, the unit bettered their operational takings by 22 percent from the last year, propelled by a concentrated effort with their “home away from home” showdowns securing high profile and excellent visibility for their goods. Former victors of this distinction include the Cleveland Charge (once Canton Charge), Windy City Bulls, and Mexico City Capitanes.

NBA G League Social Responsibility Award: Maine Celtics’ Lewiston Strong

Disaster struck Lewiston, Maine on Oct. 25, 2023, resulting in 18 lives lost and 13 injured due to a heinous firing incident. Swiftly reacting, the Maine Celtics mobilized support to consolidate the Lewiston society a mere two days subsequent to the event by collaborating with the Boston Celtics.

Squad members donned Maine Celtics warm-up shirts throughout their initial match at home, whereas the squad showcased “Lewiston Strong” signs within the facility and a blue “Lewiston” band adorned the home and visiting uniforms for the entire campaign.

Moreover, Maine orchestrated a “Lewiston Strong” Evening, featuring distinct uniforms, merchandise, and illustrations on December 16, 2023, replicating the Lewiston High School’s colors and motifs. Enthusiasts were presented with “Lewiston Strong” cheer towels, and all personnel, including the coaching staff, donned blue “Lewiston Strong” tops for the night.

Local artist Eamon White was commissioned to craft Lewiston-themed art, which was displayed at the Portland Expo throughout the season. Victims and their kin were honored as Honorary Captains on the court, and spectators were invited to acquire tickets via a specific URL, with $10 from every ticket sale being directly contributed to the Lewiston-Auburn Metro Chamber Foundation.

NBA G League Promotion of the Year: Maine Celtics’ “Amazing Maine”

The Maine Celtics were also honored with the Promotion of the Year accolade for their “Amazing Maine” campaign in collaboration with L.L. Bean. At the heart of Amazing Maine stood the iconic L.L. Bean “Maine Hunting Plaid” jerseys, donned throughout the season. The utilization of L.L. Bean’s distinctive font for the “Maine” on the jerseys was permitted. Game-time endeavors included regional giveaways from L.L. Bean, intriguing trivia, an L.L. Bean-themed “Dress and Dash” competition during breaks, and rewards for fans attired in L.L. Bean garments. This initiative gained recognition through NBC Sports Boston’s coverage.

On January 27, 2024, the fourth chapter of Amazing Maine spotlighted the Northern Maine area. The Maine Potatoes Association played the role of the Game Night Sponsor and was also the recipient of the 50/50 raffle proceeds. Every ticket was sold, with 825 group tickets purchased from that territory, which seldom arrives at Maine Celtics events due to its remote location. Overall, the Amazing Maine saga spawned in excess of $50,000 in sponsorship earnings and a gross ticket revenue of $232,526, with four out of the five Amazing Maine matches being sold out. Amazing Maine content generated 2.24 million impressions and 126K interactions on Maine Celtics’ digital media platforms.

NBA G League Marketing Award: Austin Spurs

The marketing prowess of the Austin Spurs, reflected through media exposure and digital media reach, has significantly influenced the expansion of their supporter demographic and added an overall buzz around the squad, extending the team’s influence and fan base beyond the Austin area.

Encounters in Laredo and Corpus Christi noticed notable upswings in fiscal gains, as well as interaction with local communities through diverse undertakings and collaborations – for instance, teaming up with the YMCA for the jerseys shone light on the team’s dedication to such partnerships. The collective endeavor from the entire office personnel, coaching squad, players, partners, and more is truly commendable and a pivotal aspect of the campaign’s victory.

NBA G League Youth Basketball Award: Iowa Wolves

The NBA G League has proclaimed today that the Iowa Wolves are the victors of the NBA G League Youth Basketball honor for the 2023-24 season. The recognition for youth basketball was granted for the Iowa Wolves High School Hoops series on January 16 that included Perry High School and Saydel High School engaging in a boys and girls varsity basketball twin bill at Wells Fargo Arena.

The matches served as Perry’s initial re-engagement in athletics following a sorrowful incident at the high school on January 4, where the school headmaster, Dan Murburger, and middle schooler, Ahmir Jolliff, perished.

The Iowa Wolves entity, after conferring with both institutions, unanimously decided to proceed with the fixtures as a form of solace for the Perry community in the face of the disaster. Furthermore, the Wolves and Wells Fargo Arena declared that proceeds from the matchday would go to the Perry High School Booster Club.

The engagement witnessed the highest turnout ever for a high school hoops event. Subsequently, during a Perry local fixture, Iowa Wolves’ president of business operations Drew Van Meeteren and head of ticketing Alex Barker handed over a check of $17,305 to their booster club. This benefaction, along with numerous others from different local high school booster clubs, will empower the Perry booster club to fulfill upcoming projects and requirements.

The Iowa Wolves High School Hoops Series allows high school basketball squads of both genders from across Iowa to compete on the Wells Fargo Arena hardwood. These clashes are arranged on days without Wolves fixtures or during early afternoon prior to Wolves’ home clashes.

Kicking off in 2013, it offers high school basketball crews, possibly not qualifying for state championships at Wells Fargo Arena come March, a shot to play a season game in the downtown coliseum. A school opts to host and agrees to relocate a match to Wells Fargo Arena, thereby being denoted as the host team.

NBA G League Partnership of the Year: Mexico City Capitanes

In September 2023, the Mexico City Capitanes entered into a partnership with ADO, a prominent bus operator in Mexico. This alliance fostered ticket vending avenues through the “Tour Capitanes” initiative, hosted by ADO’s own touring company, Turibus. It also aided ADO in amplifying their marketing and promotional strategies within Mexico’s sports realm by launching a customized CAPITANES bus, with the cabins redesigned to provide over 1.5 meters of legroom for player comfort.

This joint venture demanded concerted contributions from the Capitanes’ entire team, involving efforts from all administrative divisions and basketball operations personnel. During the kickoff celebration for this alliance, the team unveiled the CAPITANES bus, with players, media personalities, influencers, and collaborators all taking part.

As the season unfolded, ADO boasted a sideline presence during games, LED advertising, and several matchday activities including a model bus giveaway. In tandem with ADO’s sightseeing service, the organization also inaugurated Tour Capitanes, a one-of-a-kind adventure immersing participants in the

Fervor of an exhilarating G League Regular Season confrontation, accompanied by an urban exploration, an encounter with Juanjolote, exclusive seating, and more was displayed. On Feb. 5th, the squad observed ADO Day, throughout which in excess of 2,000 passes were distributed to the personnel of ADO, affording them an extraordinary escapade at the contest.

In harmony, the Capitanes and ADO orchestrated numerous charitable endeavors, highlighted by a relief drive following Hurricane OTIS’s onslaught on Acapulco in Oct. 2023. Amassing critical supplies, the team transported these to the beleaguered Acapulco aboard the CAPITANES bus, offering substantial aid to upwards of 650 family units.

Supporters who contributed essentials such as bottled water, non-perishable food, blankets, personal care items, attire, implements, or other beneficial wares were granted a voucher to witness the match on Dec. 5th, culminating in over 200 complimentary tickets thanks to the generous contributions amassed.

The Maine Celtics and the Wisconsin Herd were jointly lauded with the Content Series award.

Maine earned plaudits in the extensive content division for their YouTube chronicle, The Maine Celtics Podcast, which chronicled the season’s development and triumphs. With eight installments unfurled, the series involved interviews with organization members at strategic season milestones. The production provided an in-depth, superiorly crafted video podcast exceeding thirty-minute explorations.

Besides achieving Maine’s objectives of elevated narrative and in-depth discourse, it emerged as a centerpiece of the broadcast network, transitioning into a sports analysis show prefacing home game telecasts. This podcast also became a mainstay on Tubi’s newly launched G League TV channel, enticing over 3.5 million distinctive devices throughout the previous season.

Recognition was given to Wisconsin in the brief content group for its “Mic’d Up Player Connectivity” initiative. The Herd aimed at captivating a broad audience by fostering closer ties with the athletes within the community and transcending standard basketball storylines by showcasing the athletes’ characters.

The Herd’s bite-sized vertical content, captured during practice sessions and Media Day, yielded significant digital engagement, topping NBA G League team charts in combined views on TikTok and YouTube, also seeing its TikTok constituency swell by over 1000% compared to the previous term.
